b58 engine replacement recall

I just brought in my 340i xdrive for service about a week ago and they tell me it has a recall. Turns out there was a recall on the engine. Supposedly the bearings are either scratched or cracked or something and they have to replace the engine. Anyone going through this?

Updated with official bulletin:

B58 Engine Recall - BMW Service Bulletin SI B11 26 15

Engine
B58 Engine – Check and Replace Crankshaft Guide Bearing

Model
F30 3 Series Sedan with B58 engine and manual transmission.

Situation
The upper crankshaft guide bearing may wear out prematurely. The wear on the upper guide bearing can cause the clutch pedal to malfunction during shifting. The Engine Malfunction warning may be illuminated and a fault will be stored in the DME memory for the crankshaft sensor. Noise may be heard from the lower engine and transmission bell housing area.

If the crankshaft guide bearing or crankshaft is found damaged during the inspection then the engine must be replaced. Engine damage is a rare occurrence.

Affected Vehicles
This Service Action involves F30 vehicles produced from July 2015 to November 2015. Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked by your local BMW dealership.

Hmm. That's a little crazy if true. I have been hearing an odd whining/winding noise from the engine. It's been driving me crazy. It sorta sounds like bad alternator bearings judging by clips of that issue I've listened to but could potentially be bad bearings from some other location. Of course when I took it in they said they don't hear anything abnormal. I've been waiting until I switch out my winter wheels/tires to address it again since it otherwise drives ok with no warning indicators. I now obviously wonder if it's related to whatever this recall is about.

well I never noticed anything wrong with the car or even any noticeable noise. My service rep said it's a VIN specific recall. I'm not all that knowledgeable on cars but he said they had to drop the oil pan to take pictures of the bearings so that BMW could determine whether or not to replace the engine. Now I'm waiting on them to receive the engine and install it

that's what I said. but it's a lease so at the end of the day it's not my car or I would definitely be making a complaint to BMW

dtl1125 - do you know when your car was manufactured? Mine was early Oct.

Wow, that sucks. I was pretty bummed when the tranny had to be swapped on my car, but this is another level.

See if they'll add the MPPK for your inconvenience.

and I've been thinking about what they can do for the inconvenience. they did put me in a 535i X drive executive package as a loaner. The service rep keeps pushing how it's a better car and I should be happy I get to cruise around in it for the price of my 340 but if I had it my way I'd be driving my car and not theres. so it seems to me he wants me to feel that they're doing me a favor as to not ask for anything else.

You guys better start calling and asking, that sounds pretty serious, and we don't know how far back the recall is going to go.

the interesting thing is they didn't contact me about it. I went in bc I had a bubble and bent the rim. also the driver side window was having an issue and I believe they replaced the regulator. I wasn't due for actual service for another 3-4k miles. the service rep said they did the service anyways so I wouldn't have to come in later. However I don't know why that matters bc they're putting in a new engine anways.

Shouldn't you (and us) be getting a letter in the mail for the recall as well?

Thanks for sharing. The engine in my 2013 F30 335i sedan (N55 however - built in December 2012) was diagnosed with a very similar problem: excessive wear and tear in connecting rod bearings. BMWNA approved full engine replacement.

The oil pan was also dropped to examine connecting rod bearings and take oil samples (excessive metal shavings present).

Could you please learn from the dealer what specific bearings were the root cause?

My 6mt produced at the end of November also shows no recalls. OP, did you check your VIN for recalls?
