The last BMW performance power kit started at $1k and a year later it was down to $500.

I jumped on this when first introduced on E90 335i N55 models, which at that time just included a software upgrade and a plate for the engine bay noting the PPK was installed. My car has a manual transmission, so the increase was advertised at 20 bhp, 17 lb ft torque. I think that I paid something like ~$625 installed. It was a curiosity at my dealer, as my car was the first one they had done.

The net result? Like noted below, it sure felt like a LOT more than the advertised increase to me, plus it seems like my gas mileage went up as well. At the time, the 335is with the hotter N54 hadn't been out too long, but some were saying that the performance felt similar. BMW has been noted for underrating output figures in the recent past, so I don't doubt it. Knock on wood, but I have had zero problems whatsoever with my car after nearly two years of ownership.

The bottom line is that it may not be a huge jump like aftermarket kits offer, but it is covered by the warranty. My guess is that BMW engineers are being conservative so as to maintain emissions and mileage within specifications, while giving enough extra punch to lure enthusiasts to pay a little extra. It's not like they don't soak you for every little thing that might come standard on a Korean car these days, so why should this be any different?

I did note that the next service interval due cut in half as soon as I picked up the car from the dealer. I also noted that the first spark plug change goes from 90k miles down to 45k miles, which is mentioned in the fine print. I guess that's why they don't just put it on every car - the "free maintenance" would have to pick it up before the warranty runs out!

If they can do this for the N55, is it possible to wring a few more ponies out of the N20? I guess that there wouldn't be enough takers, so it probably won't happen.

It's great that BMW offers this kind of aftermarket tuning for so many of their cars. I know it seems pricey, but it also comes with the peace of mind of being engineered in-house to the car's tolerances, and doesn't affect the warranty.

I wish more car companies would do this.

dealer quoted me 1 hour install and I've seen it less than an hour on some BMW documentation (depending on when your car was built)

Does anyone know if this will be exclusive to the F30 3-series or will it be applicable to the whole like of N55 F-series, such as the '13 F25 X3?

When BMW announced the PPK months ago, they noted an n20 PPK will also be offered.

But then people would pay 1100 dollars just for the ///M engine cover with zero power increase

The fact that the car retains the same fuel economy while losing 0.2 seconds in the 0-60 makes this so great. I'm guessing you will be able to have it as an option straight from factory for the 435i

The M guys spend this amount just for an intake elbow that gives +5 hp. Plus full warranty is honored, not a bad deal in and of itself, but makes you wonder if engineers are deliberately leaving hp on the table in order to sell performance items later on.

Absolutely, don't get it myself, but hey each to their own.

The laughable thing is even with the engine cover that doesn't affect performance you still have to declare it to your insurance company who then put up your premium.

I'd rather just go for the full M Performance model when they finally get round to announcing it...

I hope they make a performance upgrade for the m135i. I am new to bmw cars (I've only owned vag cars so far), I thought that any 35 engine being 1-3-5 series has a turbo, so why so conservative on the performance? For that price tag I think 40hp+ is justifiable not less.

What? Who would declare an engine cover to insurance? I know lots of people with full motor swaps and no insurance knows.

I rather spend my money on this than a M-Performance exhaust that doesn't even do anything performance wise.

You can be denied coverage if an accident happens its called material misrepresentation.

the M PPK claims the same gains hp/tq as the 2011 PPK... I got mine for under 600 dollars installed at BMW of El Cajon over a year ago. it didnt come with any M stickers just the BMW PPK hard decal for inside your engine... 1100 is a rip off... I only got this tune for the warranty... I got the CAI, CP, and DP outside of OEM... but with COBB being out with S2 maps this is your better option for under 1K price tag...

I don't know how much experience you have with this kind of thing, but as mods go that's not bad at all, and specially since it retains the normal warranty.

this is weak sauce. $1100 for 20hp is not a fantastic boost for the buck, and throttle remapping, which is probably where the real bump in PERCIEVED performance is, is certainly nothing new.

Plus this further M branding just dilutes the prestige of a real M.

I wish they had this mod for my F10. If its $1100 and power is under rated, it's a bargain, since your factory warranty is still intact. I worry about getting a JB4 and having my warranty voided.
If the price comes down to $650 or so like others have said, its a steal.

If a dealer will do it for $1000 installed it would be hard to pass up.

So 335xdrive will be 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. In non perfect road conditions it will match a M3 on a straight line.
