Charge Pipe Failure! Already started! **Updated with Pics**

I wanted to let you guys know we have had our first N55 charge pipe failure. I will try and get some pics from customer to post up so everybody can monitor theirs, but its seems the F-series N55 charge pipe will see the same failure rate as the E-series.

I was hoping the redesign would fix this weakness but does not look like the case.

Inspect your charge pipes routinely..

If it fails, would there not be a warning from the car?

Depends on the failure.. Some fail slowly (develop boost leak) and some fail catastrophically where the car is un-drivable (This data from E-series N55)

I believe this was stock tune. On the E-series the charge pipes fail on stock cars. Obviously more boost running through the system can speed up a failure but high boost is not the absolute cause of the failure as these don't stand up to stock boost levels.

So we should just buy the ER chargepipe and be done with it

What I dont want to happen is have it fail catastrophically where it needs towed to BMW and the tune is on (whether that caused it or not obviously isnt good)
I know you can tell them where to tow it too but it would obviously be a pain to tow it home, remove JB4, then tow it back

Just to clarify - you are saying the stock cp failed, not the er pipe failed?

Yes the stock charge pipe failed. Being replaced by the ER pipe.

Never had a failure on an ER charge pipe equipped car. (N54 or N55)

That's what I thought... Only this isn't the first stock N55 CP that I've heard that has failed so the ER upgrade is a must. Mine's going on this weekend (as long as my IC gets here)

.... And I shopped around and Mike does have the best price BTW

Here is a pic of the failure point on customers car.. Flange to Throttle body. Waiting for pics of the actual damage once CP is removed and replaced with the ER charge pipe.

Was the customer running more boost (Jb4?)
I'm just curious what the customers mods were...

When you say catastrophic failure what does that mean? I'm thinking the car loses a ton of power but there is no damage to anything other than the actual charge pipe and once it's replaced back in business correct?

I remember my charge pipe popping off at the intercooler in my E90 335. Made a loud popping sound. Put it back on and tightenend clamp. Car was still driveable without the charge pipe although a road bike would probably have passed me.

That sounds like the 'failures' I've heard. Haven't heard (although it doesnt mean it cant happen) about blown engines due to a chargepipe failure.

Sometimes they shatter.. One customer lost his T-Map sensor as it was sheared off. If your pipe shatters the car is not drivable. This kind of failure is rare, but has happened to several people. Usually the charge pipe cracks and pops off.

Mike, what's the ID of the pipe on both ends? I'm buying the charge pipe today and getting some breezeclamps (http://www.amazon.com/Breeze-Constan...=breeze+clamps)
