Replaced the overflow coolant line on my 2016 M235 with 47K miles last weekend. It was completely fine with absolutely no signs of fatigue. Same thing held true for my OEM charge pipe when I replaced it 4 months ago. Oh well, better safe than sorry I suppose.

I do find it interesting that many people that have these fail have aftermarket intakes. Makes me wonder if some are leaning on the pipe joint when installing intakes.

I replaced mine on a 2015 with 45k miles a few week ago and it felt totally fine as well. New one almost felt worse because when they shipped it, they "curled" it into an irregular shape to fit in the box. Didnt take too much to bend it back into shape, and i suspect (hope) once it got hot it conformed to the new shape. The manufacture date of the new one was end of 2019 at least.

I think some break due to operator error, other's might become brittle more quickly if for example someone lives in a cold climate and they frequently cycle from freezing to boiling temperatures.

Is the replacement part partially sleeved? I was looking at the factory part and the portion which travels across the front of the car is sleeved.

Just looked back at photos and it seems that they are sleeved in the same spot, namely, the passenger side portion near the coolant overflow tank.

New one is the one that is more 'curled' from shipping and has the tag on it.

My connector just broke off as well. Sorry I didn't see this thread before it happened. 2014 f32 with 80K....

I do have a question, what is the hose running right over top/ next to the connector that is breaking ?

Well mine broke as well and it took the thermostat with it somehow... Funny thing is, I bought the part months ago but never got around to installing it.

After I replaced the above hose, I got a CEL and it was "thermostat stuck open". I topped off the res when I got home and replaced the tube, but I'm guessing the thermostat died because I lost a fair amount of coolant when it cracked, engine temps never went high or anything but maybe that's why it went.

Ended replacing the thermostat myself, what a PITA... Seriously, it sucked. I've never had a BMW project where I hit that point of no return and say "do I just pay for someone to do this."

The friggin' fan shroud is a mega b*** to remove. You know where to find my blog/DIY if you want to read about my pain.

Well, this coolant tank expansion hose exploded on me a few mins ago, while I just sitting in the car, with the engine still idling, just simple running the heater, when smoke just started bellowing out from the hood, where it left a mess of sprayed coolant all over the engine bay.

However, thanks to this thread, I had bought a backup hose and just kept it in the same garage the first hose blew.. #Irony

Valuable head-up here guys, heed the warning and purchase a replacement hose all you N55 owners because trusts me, its eventually going to give up..

I've only got 32K miles* on my 2014 but seeing these pics and posts make me pleased that I've got a spare hose in my garage for this eventuality. The unusually-rigid plastic seems doomed to break with time and heat. Maybe I should throw it into the trunk...

*pre-COVID I was traveling 80% and my car would sit in the garage for weeks at a time, and when I do go into the shop it's four miles...

Hey, thanks for this, I wasn't aware of yet another cheap plastic piece that will crumble... I paid how much for this car? 🙄

Has the OEM coolant pipe been improved, or is the replacement going to break eventually? If so, seems like another opportunity for aftermarket.

— off to FCP... what the hell, that's where I get my Volvo 240 parts anyway!

if you already bought a replacement... i would just go ahead and install it instead of leaving it as 'backup'. you can keep your old one as 'backup'

As far as I know, there are no revisions to the hose, so you should expect the same life from the replacement. It makes sense to just buy from FCP and replace on a normal cycle, maybe every 4 years/40k or so.

No, this is the first time I replaced it..

In that photo, I just put the old (broken) and new hose together to juxtapose them..

I will concurs with other members that they new OEM hose feels a lot more flexible. The the old pipe, when I was removing the other side that was still attached to the overflow tank, it just crumble into brittle pieces, like the plastic gave up, as I was removing it..

I'm at 4 years and 36,000 miles, so I figure constant heat and cool cycles, give or take, I would say you would need to replace it roughly every 30,000 miles or 3 years..

OOF.

OK, adding that to my weekend project... I'm 32K miles but almost 7 years.

I also ordered the aluminum "mickey mouse" fitting from FCP but they sent me the wrong part, so that will have to wait.

Thanks a lot, this was very helpful!

BTW, the OEM part Number is: 11537598234

It certainly looks like it was the next piece that was on its way out..

Another one bites the dust! Mine broke down, got the part and will replace tomorrow. Thanks for all the write-ups.

What do you guys do to wash off all the coolant that splashed everywhere?

Also, i wish i saw this post earlier... are there other common issues i should already look into? I have 435i, F32 2014.

Thanks!

Charge pipe, mickey mouse flange, belt/tensioner (especially with oil leaks), OFHG, VCG, oil pan gasket. The last 3 you just monitoring and replace right away with leaks appear.

Just do it with the car cold and it should be a quick swap. I didn't lose any coolant.

Ordered a replacement from Amazon to be safe (335xi, ~57k), and unfortunately it came today and is bent in half with a hard crease...
