N55 Valvetronic replacement (my experience)

I recently was having some strange symptoms and thought originally it was related to my tune, since the symptoms only appeared when BM3 stage 1 was downloaded. I wanted to share my experience with what i thought was going to be a very difficult repair.

2013
N55
200k miles
Manual trans
BM3 stage 1 93 octane

symptoms:
  1. Random spikes in RPM, Car acted like it went inot nuetral and rpms would spike momentarily
  2. rough idle
  3. random rpm spikes got progressively worse over time
  4. car would die and restart while driving
  5. eventually it would not restart with tune, i had to download factory tune to start and it put itself into limp mode
  6. lots of codes including valvetronic to many attempts, oil pressure too low before start

I replaced the E cam, bearings, Valvetronic motor, and valvecover.

Car started fine but very rough. i now had a miss in CYL 1. Replaced that coil, which solved that issue. Car runs great again.

Some things i learned that worth mentioning.
  1. this isnt hard, take your time and plan on a full day to repair
  2. special tools required is a fuel injector removal and installer tool. 30$ on amazon
  3. you will need fuel injector o rings and compression rings
  4. you dont need a special tool to seat the orings on the injectors, just use a cap to a pen
  5. go ahead and replace your spark plugs
  6. use m6x30 bolts to suck the ecam back in place, this eliminated the need for BMW special spring removal tool
  7. ValveCover must be torqued properly and pattern must be followed
  8. you do not need insta to relearn the VMotor. cycle your car from OFF to ACC 2 a few times. your car resets the stops 500 times per second every time you do that.
