got my car back from pnw race tonight. with it nearing 60k miles, they fully serviced it, changing filters, fluids, and spark plugs. i also had them install 12mm traklite spacers, a cts turbo charge pipe upgrade, an afe power momentum gt cold air intake, and an afe power dynamic air scoop. additionally, they sent my dme to kies for unlocking. huge thanks to stefan and paxton at pnw race for their help. tomorrow, i’ll set up bootmod3 and xhp.

I just did bootmod3 over Thanksgiving and really like it so far. I'm over in Kitsap and have been happy with MaxRPM, but good to know of other good performance shops. |

My 2017 DME is locked also. Apparently, if you've been to a dealership recently for certain services, they've been locking them. From what I've read.

Correct. In the US only though, not in Europe.

anytime in the last 3 years that a dealer updated a car’s istep version, they would also lock the DME. they’d do this while you’re there for other services too.
i think i read that 2018s came locked from factory, but I couldn’t verify that.

Upgraded my Soundsystem
Although I have the HK sound system, I felt it was lacking. So I decided to upgrade all speakers & Subwoofers.
Even though BMW charge a hefty supplement for the HK System, the quality still has a lot to be desired. I didn't want to buy a specific BMW upgrade set, as they are also overpriced imo (as are most brand-specific upgrades) So I went for Focal speakers as I have very positive experience with this brand. I designed (& 3D printed) some adapters for the subs and speakers to fit in the original locations, which turned out to be quite the challenge due to the limited space. While everything was disassembled, I used the opportunity to install soudproofing to the doors and panels: The end result was better than I expected. The sound is much deeper and more detailed even with original amp. Personally, I don't feel the need to upgrade the amp as it's more than enough for me. It took many hours to design the adapters and install everything, but the result was well worth it! Last edited by Tatanka1961; 12-11-2024 at 12:02 PM.. |

Did spark plugs, not bad for 60k miles on them, all were still between 0.030-0.032! Honestly this took more time and effort because of those stubborn coils than the CV axle I swapped on my Forester just before doing this! But wasn’t a bad job overall. Noticed a slight leak at the rear of the valve cover, which is honestly a huge relief as I noticed some oil that was leaking down the back of the engine head the rear main seal and I was hoping it wasn’t that. Couldn’t see it until the cowl cover and all of that stuff was removed though. Once it gets warmer I’ll likely swap the gasket and cover since it’s original and has 12 years and 120k on it
Now, time to tune! |

Washed it and went on a little drive. It has been sitting at the back of the driveway for about a month since we picked up our i4.

Bought it back and drove it home from LA to El Paso on a tank and a half of diesel.
500+ miles between fuel stops is a whole new level of endurance driving.

Have about a week of driving after my tune and have some initial thoughts:
N55 PWG MHD Stage 1 91 Octane -I was surprised by how much harder it pulls, especially in sport mode. Very noticeable shove and I can really feel the boost come on- it’s still very smooth and not really laggy but when I floor it I can feel the shove come on and stay on. -I was surprised by the additional torque- I could easily do a burnout (not that I was in the habit of roasting my nice tires mind you) from a standstill, but I can floor it while going 30-40 mph and the DSC has to step in a bunch, so it breaks traction way easier. There’s also a few roads I frequent that if I stomp on it on a straightaway I would get up to 60 or so and now it’ll get up to mid 80s (and that’s with me backing off it earlier than I used too). When pulling a log on the interstate I substantially passed my previous top speed accidentally too- all that to say, it’s really woken up the car. -Maybe my favorite change is in comfort mode though- I read a few threads where the car feels lighter and peppier overall, and I’d have to agree. It’s not twitchy or jumpy, but it goes with less provoking (but not in a throttle tuning way, just an extra torque way). Very smooth on and off throttle transitions, and I would say that the shifting feels smoother too at all speeds -But the biggest plus is what it did to my exhaust- I have an M2 Axleback on, and I have loved it- but, with an 8AT the engine likes to sit really low and almost lug itself when cruising around town for the MPG (low RPM with a higher load). If you listen with a stock exhaust, you can barely notice it. You notice it more with the valve opened on the stock one too. On the M2, it was noticeable when going up hills in the 55-65mph range more, never droned or made unpleasant noises otherwise. But with the tune, that lugging characteristic is either gone or vastly diminished and the exhaust feels pretty much as quiet as stock at those speeds and conditions now, and still opens up and sounds nice when flooring it, crushing in sport, or with the transmission in S to let the OEM burbles do their thing. I think the exhaust refinement alone was worth the money for me, but overall I have been very impressed with what just Stage 1 has done, and a conservative octane level at that. I just have an ER CP on right now, but my next move is an IC, and after that I’ll probably go up to Stage 2, looking forward to seeing that difference too! |
