and refused to change the oil feed pipe that i agreed to pay £750 for them to do.

they are now charging me for a work relating to draining water from an exhaust back box that i DID NOT agree to!

That looks just like mine if I had left it for a few days. The test you should do, is like what I did in here.


Let the smoke clear on start up - then warm it up, let it idle for 5-10 mins then give it some Revs to check it's not valve seals or turbo seals.

I am confident it's this pipe, or your turbo seals have gone. I was lucky because I caught it early and I did the work myself so only cost £50.

I think I put the pipe part number up and you can order from bmw parts department. Maybe an indy will fit?

i've already checked the exhaust when warm after a run out, revving it up no smoke at all.
i'll probably have no choice but see if i can find a good indy locally.

as after calling me about the exhaust, i refuted that was the issue, and wanted them to continue with the repair to the oil feed line and turbo.

the dealership ignored me and point blank refused to do the repair that we had agreed from the initial investigation work that i had paid for... to replace the turbo oil pipe and check the turbo for oil leaks.
and did the work that they decided to do...

they then charged me £289 to tip some water out of the exhaust, and let me have my car back...

i can't understand how something as simple as asking for a repair to be done is made to be so difficult...

Jokes aside, my dealer were pretty useless about this issue. My service agent who is a nice chap said it was probably valve seals and quoted silly money to investigate. When I ordered the pipe from part department they couldn't confirm if it was for my car so had no return rights. However, it fit perfectly and was the recall version part in the USA

One thing worth mentioning is you may need the indy order the part as they sometimes don't like fitted supplied parts. Hopefully a clued up indy will be aware of the issue.

I took the risk of not replacing the turbo as I read they were pretty reliable up to 200k, plus I was willing to do the job twice it didn't fix it. The relief after waiting 3/4 days and finding no smoke was great.

Good luck, hopefully you can find somewhere that will do it. Failing that I'm sure a normal garage will do it. They'll need a gasket kit £25-40 (manifold graphite seals, o rings for coolant, gasket for drain pipe and one for turbo/cat.

Not sure if it was default, but the US issued a recall on this pipe, but the UK didn't. Might be able to find some information online about it.

@DG330, thanks for the detailed post. Very informative! My wife's X1 started doing this recently (startup only) car has 130km on it. I am thinking of changing the oil feed. Is there a chance it can be done without pulling the turbo off?

Hi,

Nope, turbo needs to come out unfortunately as the bolt that hold the feed into the turbo is facing the block. So impossible to get to it.

You'll need a engine beam and a older tow bar key to screw into the block to support the engine when removing the engine mount. If not it will tip over to the side and be a pig to get back on its side.

If you're patient and have the right tools it's an alright job.

Have you seen how difficult it is to replace the thing? Not really something you do for ‘only’ preventive purposes.

Yeah I wouldn't bother until it smokes. Just catch it early and you'll be fine to just do the pipe.

Also, this only affects cars up to when the recall part was issued. Eventually BMW built with the upgrade, so not an issue beyond a certain year.

It's always the way that the early years are plagued with issues, which I own haha. 2 timing chain replacements in 100k miles and the turbo oil feed pipe

I have just started having this issue with my 2013 328i F30 after an oil change. I think the oil is too thin 0w20 as i didnt have this smoking issue on my last oil change (5w30)

Looks like i'm joining the bandwagon of replacing this feed line!

Thanks to all posters diagnosing this problem. I have same issue and can't get anyone that knows how to fix. Don't have the skills/capability to do myself so is there anyone in the UK that can recommend a garage to carry out the replacement feed pipe ?

So frustrating as the car drives great. Also, did anyone get through an MOT with this issue ?

Shouldn't be an issue at MOT unless the turbo is smoking all the time?

When mine did it, it was just once in the morning or after a few days of sitting around. So providing it's not smoking after that initial embarrassment then you'll be fine. Just warm

108k here on 40e with no issues. Burns 0 oil between changes.

Dealer said they’ve never seen anybody get it covered by BMW North America unless their exact model and year was listed n the bulletin. I’m probably just gonna do the work myself or trade it in during winter when it does not smoke. Then my shit BMW dealership can pay for the work themselves when they figure it out.
