New to oil changes - quick question

So I am finally going to attempt my first oil change by myself for my 2016 435i GC.

I have my jack + stands, jack adapter, Mann HUX816 filter (O-ring, smaller o-ring included), oil cap socket, oil pan, funnel, all I am missing is the which engine oil to use.

I am unsure which engine oil to use would be better since I am in the North East (Massachusetts) and the temperature will soon be cooling down and becoming colder, should I with 0w-40 or 5w-30?

Thank you for the help.

5W-30 is fine. As to which 5W-30, you'll get more recommendations than you do replies. Read your manual. If it meets the specs listed in your manual it meets the specs listed in your manual.

Either would be fine as long as it meets specs as Billfitz said. If the engine has more than 50k miles I would use a 40 weight personally, just for the added protection

Read your manual then buy from fcp euro. Starting with your second set of oil, you can ship the used oil back for some money back.

Allegedly. Lol.

I haven’t done it yet. Just got some oil in from them. I’m about 1200 miles before it’s time to change.

I've been getting my Oil change kits from FCP for several years and after the 2nd when you return the first and so on, they credit your card the cost of the kit at the current price. Only cost is shipping back to them. Using my FEDEX discount it typically costs about $15.00.

Get Castrol Edge 0W40. N55 (and for that matter N51/52/53/54, S55, N63/S63) don't need to fallow new, updated LL01 approval as long as oil is approved for MB229.5.
If ordering from FCP bcs. free oil changes, get Pentosin.
But, both Pentosin and Liqui Moly are some mid grade, to put it this way, compared to Castrol 0W40, Mobil1 0W40, Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40, Valvoline 5W40. All except Pennzoil are available in Wal Mart.now, really, really good oil, favorite among Euro owners for some 20 years is Castrol Edge 0W30, but it is quite expensive. Sometimes it is on the sale at Auto Zone.

What empirical data is available that supports your statement that ""Pentosin and Liqui Moly are some mid grade, to put it this way, compared to Castrol 0W40, Mobil1 0W40, Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40, Valvoline 5W40"? I would like to review it. Thanks,

Based on information that is available through their PDS and MSDS. Also, i worked on development of oil so can read available data and come to conclusion what is inside.
I will take back "mid grade." I would have hard time justifying putting Liqui Moly in my car if someone gave it to me for free.
Pentosin is more serious company, but fell behind a bit last decade.
