You sure they are OEM and not eBay fakes.

Bought a couple of them at a BMW dealer and they were made of plastic.

The OEM ones rust like that it's normal.

Just buy yourself some new ones.

It's actually not rust, it the foil substrate BMW uses on the rim of the cap. It reacts with brake dust, salt and the elements and starts to bubble.

I've seen it on plenty of cars including the preowned models at the dealer.

I was talking to my parts guy and they use the same foil on the spinning caps so those will be prone for doing it too but at a much higher replacement cost

Yes this has happened to me too on a few different set of wheels. Just replace them.

Hard to tell, maybe they are just mounted to a plastic circular back.
Here is the part number on the ones I bought at BMW

36 13 6 783 536 Made in Germany

I paid $39.50 CAD for two of them.

also watch out for fake replicas on ebay. pretty much if they are cheap, they're reps.

I've found the cheap reps last just as long as OEM. I've been running reps on my winter wheels and OEM on summer set, both deteriorate over time in a similar way.

As the reps get the hardest winter conditions, and seem to stand up as well as the OEM, another set of reps was the choice to replace the OEM when they deteriorated.

This is why I only drive my car when the humidity is below 30%.

OE caps are pricey. I think they were $16 at dealer, maybe more.

I've bought the reps before, $16 for 4 but they fit loosely sometimes.
I currently have the black carbon fiber reps on my summer wheels and they fit loosely and after one summer season, they are looking like OP's.

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. I suspect just keeping them clean and brushing it's edge with a fine brush and drying it is all you need to do. Over time, I'm sure that it gets neglected on every car, even mine.

When rolling, it's unnoticeable, and when parked, it's only noticeable to you.
