I can't seem to figure out my issue on a 2016 X4. My wheel is short circuiting. I don't know if I need a new clock spring, something isn't properly plugged in or I need additional coding?(Steering column light works).

This thread is fantastic! What a find Hugrov. Followed everything said here, and now I have a toasty warm steering wheel. Being a bit of a noob to this BMW modding malarkey, I really struggled to find information on getting the steering column cowling off. So I ended up making a short video of the whole process, including using Bimmercode over bluetooth to do the coding…

Hi there
I actually have the parts for this lying here.
But has never come around to fit it.
Looking at your video it looks like you actually don't need to remove the steering wheel or?

I couldn't seem to pull it away without removing the wheel, as it kind of "tilts" forward. That doesn't mean it can't be don't without removing the wheel and is absolutely worth a try 😀

That's great to hear, glad the shared info in the thread got you sorted out with the heated steering wheel. I was very happy when I discovered I already had a heated wheel fitted and it's the first thing I switch on as soon as I get in the car during the colder months

Hi there
Got mine installed and coded today.
Works like a charm.
Managed to fit it without removing the steering wheel.
Nice little feature😄

Hey all, cold weather has piqued my interest in this retrofit for my pre-LCI.

I've got the traditional sportline wheel, no KAFAS / blindspot / lane departure (as it's pre LCI, think these were all post, right?).

I've popped the cowling off today to check the slip ring. How can I tell if I've got the power cabling from the fusebox/FEM?

Keen to work that out so I can price up the parts.

Are these the only items I need?:
  1. 61319201736 (button with wiring)
  2. 61319219551 (steering column trim)
  3. second hand m-sport wheel with paddles and heater

thanks

I did everything the same, and everything works great! but when I make a diagnosis with Carly it gives me the following :

Fault code: 030351 Steering column switch cluster (SZL) (LIN): wrong version installed / Steering column switch cluster (SZL) (LIN): wrong variant

Something to worry about? Tnx

has anyone used the button with silver trim like the LCI models? I am wondering if they have the same functionality. PN is 61319384363, compared to the all black PN 61319201736

I've got the silver trim model that looks really out of place when you look at it.
But mines an LCi anyway. If I had known the difference, I'd have had the black.

Thanks for the reply, I had an pre lci f30 with the heated steering wheel and my wife always had a hard time seeing the black button. This time around, I'm leaning towards the silver trimmed button.

@DLag30 I presume your switch is on the left of the cowl - mine is, but being right hand drive, it's quite visible to the passenger - you need to be a contortionist to see it from the drivers seat! Just use the fingers to feel. The little LED is a waste of time!

Thanks for this thread!

The car I’m hoping to get has the LDW with the kafas camera in the front window so hoping it’ll have the hardware.

Wouldn’t feel confident removing the steering wheel so hopefully can be done without like others have.

This is a great thread - I’m new to the forum, but have just completed on 2019 F36 440i. I had lane departure warning, so was fairly sure the heating elements would be there (didn’t check as didn’t want to fiddle with the air bag).

I ordered the parts without reading the entire thread - as previously discussed it turns out that some of the parts were updated with LCI, but I got the pre-LCI parts. I can confirm they work just fine - I actually prefer the all black surround for the switch, rather than chrome, so worked out well.

I used the following from LLLParts. I’m UK based, but couldn’t get LLLParts to quote me in GBP, so just paid in USD.

61316823468 (BMW/MINI WAREHOUSE 2) $57.53

61319201736 (BMW/MINI BM) $73.12

For those looking to do this mod, can also confirm you don’t need to take the steering wheel off. Where possible I really don’t like playing around with airbags, so was pleased it worked fine.

To remove the lower cowling, adjust the steering wheel to its outermost and upper position. Then get your fingers around the lower cowling, and pull (hard). It will come off, you might need to give it a good tug (oo er).

I used White Rose Drive’s video for the rest. Putting the cowling back on with the wheel in place was tricky - in the end, I lined it up and gave it a firm bang in place with my fist to get the clips to engage. Needn’t be hard, sort of similar as you might have done to an old TV.

For the coding, some of the bimmercode entries were already active (activ). Assume this might be some options I already had.

Worked a charm, any questions let me know.
