M Performance Exhaust Question
Hi guys,
Last Sat i went into the dealer to pick up a CPO 2016 BMW 340i Xdrive, another sales person sold the car the night before and i never got to even see the car. Thought it was not the car for me, Today the sales person reached out again saying he has another CPO 2016 340i Xdrive with the M Performance Exhaust, i know that does not give more power as i read that but i keep seeing people talking about a Drone...what is this drone they are talking about? Anyone currently with the M Performance Exhaust...how do you like it? worth the extra bucks? Car is at 35k pre tax and fees. Pics coming as soon as they detail it. |

I can't comment about the drone, but $35k seems high for a 2016. I'm seeing a bunch of 340 2016's around us (Chicago) in the $26k - $30k range.
Unless it's got every option and like 10k miles.

You will have no drone with the M performance exhaust, specially if you are keeping the catalytic converter and the stock midpipe. The M performance exhaust is actually pretty sought after, powers gains wont be noticeable from it, but it sounds good, check out some youtube videos.
As far as what drone is when it comes to aftermarket exhausts, well, a quick google search will help you with that

I'm in Chicago my self, the ones that sell under 30k are just the basic 340i xdrive. i at least wanted to settle for the M Package. I also wanted one that had CPO and under 30k miles. waiting for a good catch, i also thought 35k was expensive knowing 2020 is just around the corner. Still have to find out if they would move on the price a bit.

Another Chicago F30 owner here. I think the drone you read about is probably from people with the full MPPSK exhaust. I have one on my car and it does drone slightly at highway speeds when in sport mode.

My girlfriend's brother has the MPE and I've never experienced any drone at all. It's an ideal exhaust for people who want something fun, but not over the top, plus it helps with resale value so it's a nice add-on for sure.

Can't speak on the price as I'm not shopping, and hence, not up to date on the current market, but basically, to add to what others have said, drone is when a particular resonance from the exhaust system makes its way to the cabin at certain engine speeds. Typically found when cruising on the highway at relatively low rpm.
The M Performance exhaust is actually just a muffler upgrade (aka, an axleback). Typically, drone becomes an issue when the piping in front of the muffler starts getting changed, ie. the resonator, midpipe, and downpipe. As long as those parts of the exhaust haven't been modified, there shouldn't be an issue with drone. However, everyone's tastes and tolerances for NVH can vary.

Isn't there a difference between the MPPK exhaust and the MPPSK exhaust?
The M Performance exhaust which came on my 435 as part of the MPPK has no drone and produces a nice subdued exhaust note. However I drove a 340 a while ago and it was very different. The exhaust was louder (didn't drone) but it also popped and bubbled pretty loudly when you lifted the the throttle in sport mode. Was this simply due to difference between the N55 and B58 MPPK's or is there the possibility of two different M Performance exhausts available? I only ask for the OP's education (and mine). I like my exhaust, but wasn't too fond of the one on the 340 I mentioned. |

I suck at price negotiating, seems like the answer is always "someone else is coming to see it also" the last one I waited for the price drop and before it did someone else bought it. Give me pointers fellas!

OP doesn't mention anything about MPPSK being installed on the car he's looking at, but if it does, it's like a $3k add on, which could make the pricing make a little more sense.

Check out cargurus.com. Put in exactly what you're looking for and go from there. If you actually live in Chicago, you're going to get whacked with the additional tax and it doesn't matter what dealer you buy from. There are a bunch available around us in the high $20's low 30's. They all have pictures, so you might have to search a bit to find one with M sport package. Or if you want, I can give you the name and contact info of a guy at Bill Jacobs BMW in Naperville and see if he can find what you're looking for.

I got this a couple of months ago for $34,000 even and only a tad over 10,000 miles.
340xi Msport with cold weather, driver assist, lighting, M Sport, Tech, Track Handling, 19" wheels, etc. Talk 'em down on price. MSRP on mine was 62,450 and they had it listed at 37,995 as a CPO car. One owner lease vehicle. |
