California law presumes you are in reasonable fear for your life when someone breaks into your home, which allows use of deadly force.
Are house burglaries just to get car keys typical MO in the US? Interested whether use of deadly force to defend means this typically doesn’t happen?

I'm going with the generally accepted police advice. I was just pointing out what I thought was a flaw in your logic and one that could actually be increasing the danger to your family. As one or two others did as well.

Of course you're entitled to think differently and have your own ideas. Bloody experts again, (police, not me or other forum members obviously) who needs em.

You could leave a syringe, spoon and a lighter out together, that might drum up some interest. In fact leave that on the seat of your car, then the keys through your window.

I guess you leave your laptop on the car seat on full display when parked in a public car park for any opportunist thieves too Since using your logic if thieves are looking round the cars with the intention of breaking in one anyway, leaving something on display doesn't increase the risk of them targeting you

If my car was in the process of being nicked I'd love to think i'd be able to smash its windscreen (e.g.: throwing something HEAVY from upstairs) so they couldn't see far and have to abandon it.

I'm leaving £200 taped to the glass on the front door tonight. Don't want anyone coming upstairs for my wallet.

Do you need me to lend you £199?

Edit - if I give you £199 will you stop having another tampax moment over a window that you've never even seen? I'll genuinely transfer it now.

It'll need to be more than one tampon for this flange

Tampax and tampons are two different things. Im sure you'd prefer the tampon.

I couldn't care less about his window, I'd got to the point in the discussion that I was just amusing myself, if not anyone else.

No need I'm sending someone round later for your car. Yemen Road, Yemen isn't it?

Honestly just can't work out why you're so keen to see my window.

When I owned a Triumph Spitfire years ago, I always left it unlocked because if someone wanted to steal the stereo, I didn't want them to cut through the top as well.

I used to leave my TR4 parked in a communal underground garage with the hood down, doors unlocked and glovebox hanging open for the same reason, after having once had a side window broken by some cretin. There were thieves in that garage every night but I never had any more trouble.

People in my area are having keys taken by guys with bamboo poles and hooks. I would rather that than have them in the house.

Except when a cretin stole the face... leaving them with a worthless stereo and me with a worthless box in the dash.
