My understanding is that only BMW can supply a new key, and it is pre-programmed (and pre-cut) at the factory before being sent out. I have read of used keys being wiped and reprogrammed, but you still need the physical key to be cut.

You'll need to provide proof of ownership and ID.

If a dealer wants to charge you to "program" the key to your car, decline and do a search. It basically consists of starting the car with an existing key whilst holding the new one against the steering column NFC point. Literally 30 seconds, so if you're quoted 30+ minutes, you can use that info when deciding where to get future work done.

my last merc was able to get aftermarket keys for $250. Factory costs was $500
