B58 oil sump housing collapsed?!?

Morning all. Just in bmw for my 440i first service

Have been told that the housing for the oil sump has collapsed, and that its a problem they've seen on the 35i/40i mlites.

Being replaced with a modified part under warranty and I get a hire car for the weekend as they haven't got the part in, so no complaints there, but it did leave me to wonder if this BS as the engines are totally different on those variants.

Wondering if the dealer apprentice has gone too hard with a spanner and made a mess of things? Anyone had a similar experience?

Possibly. She said sump but you're probably right.

More likely the oil filter housing than the sump? If so it's quite common on B58's. The Oil filter tears in half when the technician tries removing it, leaving the bottom part down a tube. At this point they either give up and take the whole unit off, or break the unit trying to remove filter remnants.

And yes, the part is the same on all F series models with B58.

As far as is known, there is no updated part. Please ask them to clarify this by showing you documentation that the part has been upgraded. RealOEM only shows one part number.

Brilliant will do. Sounds like this is the issue. She said it's a half day job and they can do it Monday. I'll be keen to see what evidence they provide of a modified part but at least it's getting done.

Yes, it's getting done because it's still under warranty. Next time might be a wholly different experience......to your wallet. This is a good opportunity to push this on behalf of the B58 community.
This is a subject that will haunt many a B58 owner in the future, potentially costing £500-600 or whatever they charge for this procedure when there is no warranty, so is a completely legitimate concern. Why has a part failed on your new car on its first attempted service? You want those concerns answered and documented in case it happens again.

Please ask for the part number of the old unit vs the new one. If it is the same, ask how would you tell the difference between the old one and this new "uprated" part. Date stamp, etc.

I am also suspect about the level of risk involved. I believe the whole inlet plenum with intercooler has to be removed to get access to this filter housing. Risk of air leaks, intercooler damage, etc. The filter housing also houses the oil cooler. Again risk of future oil leaks, dirt ingress, etc. if not done correctly.

My thread from a couple of weeks ago, sounds like the same thing.

BMW will still cover the cost of this even out of warranty. Good thing too as the extended warranty wouldn't cover it.

Surely only if the event happens at a franchised BMW service centre?
What about an indie? ....Although they would probably remove the offending filter remnant without breaking things.

So I have a 120d for the next three days as they'll be doing the whole job on Monday which is fine. Service lady was very open about the issue and it's all covered. Like others I guess I should be pleased at least they definitely are doing the oil job correctly!

Anyone know if this is still a thing on the new G20 M340i?

This would suggest G series uses the same oil filter housing, and indeed oil filters.

When BMW issued an upgraded part on the breather system for the E60/E61, they used the same part number.
The part was a direct replacement but was noticeably different internally (vortex replaced "loo roll" type)

I remember they did the same thing on the old E90’s replacing ‘Loo Roll’ crankcase breathers for ‘vortex’ type which didn’t clog up so easily and starve the turbo of oil.

Yes of course, I should have said that.

I took mine to the dealer for the first service and have been putting off doing another oil change until last week because I was worried this would happen. Thankfully after showing my mate the issues others have had he said he's not had one break up on him yet and he would be able to remove the bottom if it did happen. Luckily mine come out no issues.

Job done, car is fine, and they knocked £50 off the service cost so I won't moan too much.

The 120d xdrive I had wasn't particularly nice, and the list price with the options it had was close to £35k!!!

Good job you've got it back OK. Did they mention upgraded/replacement parts at all? Have had three interim oil/filter changes done on mine at local dealership and all have gone smoothly but would be interested to know for the future.

Unfortunately due to low staffing levels I couldn't get the info, however in fairness they've given me the technicians name and the service manager details for me to follow up so I'll be dropping an email to them and will update as and when. Just glad to have the car back!

Just as a final note, had this turn up from the dealer by way of apology. Considering its a design fault they really didn't need to do this!

Tick in the box for Peter Vardy Edinburgh

Nice touch.

Looks as if you're going to have to share them with those little fingers waiting to pounce.

Apparently the oil filter number has changed.... im not so sure but tbh as its an outside part it could easily have a rev change and have the same part number.....

This is one of the reasons why I wouldn’t risk going to an independent for an oil service
