Here's another MPE US version (#340): that's a nice sound (minute 2:20 approx)! With that you can wait for it to brake in with hopeness!

Well I'm 2 weeks in and only done 400 miles so too soon to say if the exhaust is getting noisier , the weird thing is every one says to me they can hear when it's me coming down the road because of the exhaust noise so that's not too negative at the moment ... by the way I enquired before having the MPE fitted about Akrapovic version they told me I'd loose my warranty so I chickened out ... has any one forsaken their warranty to have the Akrapovic fitted ... I reckon not too many . Shame because BMW allow it on their motorbikes !

You have to understand what 'lose your warranty' means. A dealer cannot BY LAW void your warranty (similar laws in US as well as Blighty) just because you chose to fit aftermarket parts on your car. The real point your dealer is making is if they can prove that a warranty claim is directly attributable to the part you installed, they will not cover it. In the case of a CAT back exhaust like Akrapovic, especially one that exceeds OEM spec in just about every way, I've not had one ounce of concern over it.

Seriously? You pucker up over $35 and for something 60% of the cars here have? PS - that percentage doesn't even include the 10% of douches here who still run three year old cars without a rear plate either!

I'm not hating on you, I just wouldn't stress about it.

MPE is a project by Akrapovich
The manifacturer, unlikely, is a third party...

Why is it the MPE sucks then !?!
Who the f... makes an exhaust where you cut the pipe like that, eh?

Just my opinion after checking out exh.'s before settling with Akrapovic.

Thanks for the info

What exactly are the physical hardware differences between M Performance exhaust 339 (EU) vs 340 (US) versions.

I know the 340 US version sounds better than the 339 EU version because of noise regulations etc. but what exactly is different in terms of the internals?

Less sound dampening material inside perhaps?
Less perforated pipes inside the box?

Would be good if someone could take a peek inside a 339 and 340 version exhaust, or if someone in the know could shed some light Maybe @SCOTT26 ?

Maybe someone has access to a flexible endoscope?

In another thread we opened up the original muffler, closed the holes and even tried removing the damping material. Really Nice sound for no money.
Very hard to avoid drone but great fun.

Would be great if someone did! Or could X-Ray each one lol. (Not sure how much/what that would show even haha). But i'm really curious.

I saw that DIY thread, quite a cool idea to do on the cheap! And good thing is it will be MP friendly because they shouldn't be able to see any noticeable modifications. But yeah, unfortunate about the drone.

But if we found out the internal differences of 340 vs 339 then that could help us make our 339s into 340's

That is my secret dream... I cannot really stand the quiet noise of my #339...

I don't worry about it in LA either--too many cars on the roads for them to single me out when there are legitimate hazards around.

However, where I live there are plenty of 2 lane roads with CHP traps that will even cite you for 3-5mph over the speed limit.

i am ok with my exhaust (339).

i knew i would lose a ton of sound going from my former car = 4.2 + quad tip, but the sound is nice on my blue wonder. wife thinks so too. she drives it more than i do.

Ok so if the MPE Euro version proves in the long term to be a bit disappointing , how much louder is the Akrapovic version ? Not performance but actual noise wise compared to the M version .... on Akrapovic's web site they say cruising speed the noise is same as stock level .... would it be worth the upgrade ... opinions most welcome .

According to me, Akrapovich has a very nice sound, but I think that the best I've heard on youtube is the GC Precision.
I will think about it in 2 years. In the meanwhile I must amortize the 1.200€ I spent for my disappointing 339 MPE...

Another disappointing 339 MPE:

Without the MPPK (that increases burbles) and before the breake-in, the sound is terrible!!
The girl is very nice

Where are you all getting the MPPK from? The price directly from BMW is insane

You install MPPK to save warranty, so you HAVE to get it from BMW, in my opinion, otherwise get one of the various JB or DINAN modules...

The Akrapovic is slightly louder at idle. Even louder if you run with the exh. Valve open.
During reving it's Also louder, ( even louder in Sport if you have the MPPK).

You Can get exhausts that is Much louder, but as far as I have have experienced none of the other exh.s are Drone-free.
Akrapovic Also has the Valve concept as the original bmw exhaust.
Akrapovic is lighter than others.
The reason why I chose the Akrapovic.

Do you think perhaps you're expecting too much from the MPE? (with regards to 339).

If there is a noticeable change in exhaust note then it's good enough for me while keeping Motorplan in tact, and also keeping droning to a minimum. In the videos I watch I can definitely notice a change in characteristic in the exhaust of stock vs 339 MPE. The MPE sounds more "raspsy"/throaty and airy which is nice! I'm sure in person it will sound even better.

Look forward to installing my 339..

Yes I know the 340 sounds quite noticeably louder, but unfortunately not much we can do about that if we want to maintain motor plan etc. otherwise I would have probably gone with an after-market system in the beginning.

No, I expected right, because I had the MPE on my old E91 335xi and there were several videos on youtube of the new (340) MPE, both sounding fantastic, that pushed me to order MPE when I bought my 435i.
For me it doesn't worth it, absolutely.
