N20 not as slow as I thought

So after I roasted this engine for a good bit, I have to say the car isn’t that terribly slow. By know means is it fast.. After a lot of money spent and wasted finally got the car pretty good. I’ve raced a few cars down in Mexico. To my surprise the car did very well. Ran a fbo g37s a fbo 370z same engine obv just z is a lot lighter. A 392 charger stock and a tuned x5m. I was very impressed with the n20. I’ll have to start to record more of these and post them.!

exactly. It feels quicker than it is but the n20 cars are great to drive. Bit of bolt ons and bootmod and youve got yourself a great dd.

I believe I might be able to get a little quicker with the setup in running I wanna take it to a strip I may be able to know that everything’s opening back up. Currently FBO stage 1 turbo upgrade running full e85

I was under the impression that the N20 needed some internal mods to hold up to more than roughly "stage 2" power levels and that even THAT was causing issues... you've got to be pushing pretty silly numbers to run a tuned X5M.

Agree that the N20 is not as shitty as everyone likes to pretend. Pretty quick off the line but will run out of speed in the top end versus the 6 cylinders.

You should take it to the strip someday and join this FB page:

Wonder how it stacks to the b46 motor. Curious to see if the old is as fast or faster than the new gen

I imagine upsizing the turbo would do wonders for its top end. May need to be cammed differently to really get there though. I honestly kind of miss turbo lag, I had a moderately big turbo on a 2.0l Integra way back when and that was a blast when it got spinning!

Saying you "ran" a 392 and an X5M is one thing. Whether you could still even see their brake lights afterwards is another. The 392 I imagine could be a reasonably close race, but the X5M, probably not.

I've always said that these cars are quick and powerful enough to be fun, but once a car with any real power shows up, it's game over. Quick compared to regular cars, slow compared to most performance cars.

Right? Stock X5M is in REALLY low 12s and can do it all day long.

I'm saying goodbye to my N54 E92 and moving into an F31 330i right now, my modding goals are just to get somewhere CLOSE to what I'm leaving behind. And I know it won't ever be all that close! But I do love this little wagon anyway.

I mean it does depend on what generation of X5M. However, if we're talking about a late model, than yah, you'd need to do some serious work to an N20 to go low 12's, or keep with really any S63 powered car, especially a tuned one.

If you're E92 was stock, then a stage 2 N20 will surpass that cars performance. If your E92 was modified, then it's a different story.

I think this might be the case. I ran a m235i vert the other day in "mexico" up to around 80. Stage 2 n20 6MT vs the auto stage 1 muffler delete m235i vert. we were dead even. I can only imagine what a MHI or even a "stage 1" turbo upgrade to keep the power going into the top end would do realistically. Looking for a simple solution to upgrade rod bolts and install those with a couple of buddies to get closer to 350/360 whp.

The X5M? WTF? as in the 0-60 in 3.8 seconds X5M? no that's a dual clutch V8, fast as f*ck. I've driven both, the N20 isn't on the same planet.

I haven't personally used dragy or anything, but I've raced a WRX that launches with a 1.7 60ft. I pulled half a car on him by 75 ish before I had to let off cause a car pulled out in front of me. I'd say a modified n20 can do 0-60 in 4.0 with some e30 easily.

Have to play every car to its strengths. The N20 cars are quick but not straight line dominant, it will never be a competitive drag strip car. At autox or a track day in the corners and on the brakes is a whole other story. There have been many N55 cars I have passed easily working those angles. The straight line speed was also way closer than you would guess, even the FBO stage 2 cars.

I mean run is a bit much from about 40-60 it was pretty close but once it was over 69 it started to pull away pretty hard he let off after about 3 cars I imagine it would if just pulled harder once it hit 100 lol

Also I’m Fbo stage 1 turbo running full e85 so I’ll have to get a dyno but tuner says I should be around 320whp also I’m running about 24-25lbs of boost

I do have a stage 1 turbo upgrade I race my buddies fbo n20 with out the turbo and he’s just pump 93 and from a 40-100 I put about almost 5 cars on him so it is definitely a noticeable difference. I hold boost down much better up too to where he falls to about 19 and I’m still 22-23
