I flew from Montana to Portland OR to buy a 440xi drive M-sport, track handling... with 6MT. Not new, but a CPO with 21k miles. I would have flown a lot further to snag such a rare X-drive 440 coupe. Hard to know for sure, but I likely paid a premium for the 6MT

We once jumped on a plane to Florida to buy an apparently rare MB c300 cabriolet. We ended up not buying it. It went into limp mode during the test drive. It only had 10,000 miles on it. But that was a fun trip.

While the right buyer on a nation-wide hunt might scoop it up, the typical car buyer (of any brand) can't drive one and the few who can aren't interested. The dealer would have a hard time moving the car and would end up sending it to an auction.

I've been told repeatedly by multiple dealerships they won't even consider manual transmission cars, unless the car only comes that way, because they can't do anything with them.
It’s the whole problem. I got my 435i in August 2018 , it was sitting on the lot since March 2018. It’s very niche market (manuals). I don’t know why they didn’t send my car to auction, it was owned by one of the salesmen before I got it. But anyway it took an out of state buyer to move that car.

I was so angry at how insulting low the offer was that I left immediately. This was a 2015 with 32K miles, 6MT, M Sport package, M sport brakes, dynamic handling package, MPE, 19” wheels, CF/alcantara interior, and almost all of the luxury and convenience options. Even Kelley Blue Book estimated the average trade in value at $22K and private party sale at $27K.

I’m just pissed off and wanted to vent about how this BMW dealer tried to rip off a potential customers. Good thing I’m knowledgeable about cars or else I would’ve lost my shirt over this transaction.
Dealers don't care a lick about KBB values. If you want the KBB $27K private party price, sell it privately. Trading to the dealer is about convenience, not maxing out your price.

I think what may have to do with it is that 6mt will help the value by a few grand with private sale especially if you list on an enthusiast forum.

They might've had no clue, some of these dealerships don't give a shit about these cars and what's special about some of them etc.

Also, dealers are notorious for low trade ins, it's always been like that. Nothing new.

Special to those of us on this forum is not special to the general car buying public. The dealers want/need cars they can sell. What we see as "special" a dealer sees as a car that will potentially sit on a lot for a long time taking up a space for a vehicle he can move quickly.

The best way to try and get the best value for a unique car is to sell it yourself.

But what's really annoying is when they pretend to not know when it's being traded in, then they jack it up on the lot because it's "rare"

I've been having this same issue. I've been shopping for something off road capable and narrowed down to a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and a 4Runner TRD. No dealership will give me anything close to KBB or NADA trade in value. The guy at the jeep dealership showed me a text between him and his friend at a BMW dealership who told him the 4 series GC is not a popular model and would most likely be sold at auction. It's incredibly frustrating as I've grown to regret owning this car. Wish I just kept my e92 at this point.
