Golf R 2021 - Carwow

A game changer in the 300bhp (ish) hot hatch market - performance-wise.

It's only 0.1s to 60 behind the AMG A45s and around 0.3s slower to the quarter mile.

And an (annoying) Archie Hamilton video showing similar:

If you can’t be assed to watch it.....

Golf R 316bhp 0-60 in 4.03sec and 12.44 quarter mile.

A45s 421Bhp 0-60 In 3.9sec and 12.1 quarter mile

It also matches the RS3 (both pre and post WLTP cars) for the quarter mile.

I've read they have cheaped out on the golf interior - is that true? Is it still 'jewel like'

The T-Roc I seen was plastic heaven

Interior quality is definitely down from early Mk7 levels. Consequence of dieselgate which has resulted in an excess death rate of more than 5000 people worldwide. Think about that.

I had a Mk7 GTI. 2013. No extras. Kept it for the longest I've ever kept a car at three years.

How's it a game changer? It seems very good, and super all rounder, but not sure I see anything game changing about it.

Fair point, it’s not perfect. Looks are subjective, the standard wheels are pretty awful and plastics a bit scratchy. Let alone the crappy haptic touch buttons and touch screen.

But there aren’t many hot hatches for 40k that have RS3 levels of performance.

No doubt BMW, Merc and Audi will come up with new offerings in good time that will rival the Golf. But for now, it’s not a bad effort on this latest R.

And I understand the rear torque vectoring has noticeably improved the handling over the 7.5 R.

I ... kinda want one. But it's a bit expensive. Used this might be a good bet.

Is there absolute proof dieselgate led directly to 5,000 deaths?

For "only" 320hp, that is outstanding performance.

I guess the usual suspects will release a tune soon and it will be supercar fast (atleast to 60)

Obviously no exact proof. Deaths from cheat devices from VW cars in Europe were estimated at 1200. Extrapolated worldwide with VW diesel sales that comes to around 5000.

Couldn't find the exact source but this gives an idea

Although the R outperforms the GTI on the road it certainty doesn't in the looks department. The same with the previous generation.

The front bumber looks like something you would expect of an SE standard golf model.

That did make me chuckle

I dont like the interior of the new Golf at all - with the silly touchscreen while driving - no thanks!

In today's cost conscious world and significant investment being redirected towards EVs, it is nearly impossible for VW to bring back a newer edition of VR6. But had VW decided to offer a Golf R(36) with a modernized VR6 and AWD, it would have been a runaway sales success.

+1.

There's not one model of Golf where I'd have chosen the R over the GTI. (Original R32 excluded, just the plain Rs).

I've been looking at the lease deals on these best I can find is 1+47 @470 PM on 8k inc adaptive dampers/winter pack/19"/camera/metallic considering that includes the VED as well I don't think that's too bad considering the performance and reviews its had (as a base car it's 412 PM)

I've looked at the M340i or d and they are sat around 689pm Petervardy have a few decent spec ones but add in the VED (they are on PCP) for years 2-4 and it's 720 per month.

I called my dealer he came back with was a used 840i crammed to the gunwales with spec at 700 per month, and again the VED takes the overall cost to 730pm. (although I guess he could match the M340 "deals"

I'd set a budget of no more than 400 and I guess a GTi would fit in there but I really don't like the front end scrabble you get with FWD drive cars, so the additional 70 seems worth it to get the r

I'm a bit undecided for the first time when it comes to getting a car as there doesn't seem to be any value on BMWs at the moment.
