I'm in Montreal and RWD isnt available to us. xDrive only.
Our winters are worse than Toronto/Vancouver seeing as you won't move if you only have great winter tires on a rwd car. That being said, you still need winter tires and AWD for the best traction over here. |

When I decided I wanted a 335i I tested two of them.
1- '12 335i Sport 6MT RWD 2- '13 335i Msport Auto AWD I really though that I wanted a 6MT RWD, but I really didn't like the suspension being not EDC, the skiny steering wheel and the loss of boost between shifts. The Msport with EDC and leaking front shocks had a much better handling. The car can take corners much faster than my E60 sport RWD sport suspension (M5 sway) ever did. I live in the snow belt but I never needed AWD, good snow tires and driving skills are more than enough even in deep snow, I did get stuck if my driveway (uphill) is pure ice, my ex to be wife never had a problem with the X3. But I see the AWD as a backpack, it is handy sometimes but I don't need to carry one everyday. So why did I buy one? Well, it was cheap. and nowadays a cheap Msport is rare so I bought it. I can adapt my driving around the AWD. If I had the choice between the two at the same price, I would absolutely get a RWD. More fun to drive, better handling, easier to throttle steer, easier to work on, and you can get more front camber easier. A better track car. You want sporty: Get RWD You want everyday / scare of snow or wet: Get AWD You want drag racing: Get AWD

But snow tires can save your bacon on ice and all season tires are not good at anything, just a compromise for all situations. But I agree that you receive some nasty weather, I always dreaded doing the drive from TO to MTR when I was in sales. The Hwy turns to ice and you don't know until you see cars in the ditch.
