Mileage blockers and clocked cars...rife?

I was in the dealers today getting some new wipers and ordered some winter tyres, my mileage on the M3 is an in joke there as it's just below 87k and I joked I'd have to get it clocked.

The workshop manager and my SA then preceded to tell me how rife it is with people using mileage blockers to stop the car recording the mileage and of course the more fashioned way of just having the clock wound back they are seeing more and more coming into the dealership.

They are now actively looking for the devices and checking various logs that show the signal fault as well as checking running time vs mileage for cars that require major warranty work that don't look right or part exs especially ex lease and PCP cars on low mileage contracts.

People do love to take the piss.

I think ‘mileage correction’ is quite commonplace. I used to get a car to work in London from the same firm every day for a few years. They had a fleet of E Class Mercs and one day I spotted the one year old car I was in had done just 25k miles, despite being in use virtually 24 hours a day. I asked the driver who I knew quite well and he told me that their cars covered about 200-250k miles in 2 years and would then be returned to Mercedes with about 50k on the clock.

Quite impressive that the cars could pass for 50k miles after 4-5 times that use. I do feel a bit sorry for the next owner though.

It's basically a free for all with loads of people remapping and clocking their cars, and then everyone complains about dealers....

I wouldn't buy a second hand car myself.

Most German cars wear mileage well, my M3 with close to 90k on it could pass for 35k easily.

They do several minor services themselves, ‘correct’ the mileage, and then get a service at Mercedes dealership. So the car appears to have the correct number of services, every 20k miles or whatever.

That's what has happened with cars at my dealer but they have caught them out and hopefully will continue to do so and have refused to look after the cars.

I can't stand fraudsters.

How would you stop the maintenance texts going to the dealer? I guess Mercedes doesn't have this.
