1) Probably the current X5 - entirely subjective but for what I need just now, none of my previous cars come close. Enough performance for the class of car, nice to be in on a long journey and fully loaded with kit.
2) R32 (mk5 DSG) - first decent 'auto' gearbox I'd driven and matched perfectly to the VR6. Bags of character if not outright ability (the GTI was a better handling car) and could play the relaxed cruiser. Not particularly fast and drank fuel, but that soundtrack... 3) 350z (313ps model) - replaced the R32 and within a week I regretted it. Impressed on test but a pig to live with day-to-day. Not a particularly great chassis, traction limited and heavy. It might have had 300 odd horses but they weren't prize stallions, more like beach ponies. Build quality was poor and in 2008 it still had a bloody tape deck (despite being a Bose stereo). Awful car.

1) Tough call between either my Z3 M-Coupe or C63 Estate. Both excellent and practical cars with great performance. For the engine, the looks and the all-round special feeling, the Z3 M-Coupe wins. For the performance, exhaust noise, steering, and handling balance, the C63 wins. Both great cars.
2) Despite the above, I miss my Caterham Supersport the most. I had my Caterham and C63 at the same time, and the Caterham made the C63 feel like a wobbly high-riding boat with disconnected steering and terrible throttle response. I've never had more smiles per mile than in the Caterham. Which is why I'm looking to buy another once the Wife is back at work. 3) My E46 330i. Slow, boring power delivery, overly firm ride, poor reliability. Look nice, but that's pretty much it.

Best: current 330d. Effortless to drive and equally happy munching the miles or amusingly fast when you give it some stick. The auto box is a revelation and let's you settle in to a fairly swift cruise without alarming your passengers. It is a complete indulgence but bought as a treat to myself after a tough couple of years.
A narrow second place: Fiesta ST Mountune, brilliant fun, as fast as the 330d and never fails to put a smile on your face. For day to day use it is a bit too energetic but the best bit is it's parked next to the 330d. Most missed: Honda FN2 Civic Type R, sold as I had a company car at the time and it wasn't getting used much. I didn't need to sell it and left the job within 3 months (note to self don't do that again). An amazing engine and gearbox, with fantastic handling after springs and a fast road set up. It felt like a mini touring car and nothing beats the V-TEC second wind on an open road or up a slip road. Ultimately it was a bit flawed but so much character and when in the right mood was very good fun. It was also quicker than contemporary road testers made out if you could get your head round the low gears and using all the revs. Worst: Audi S3. Fast but completely one dimensional, poor ride, inert handling, 22 mpg, arrogant dealers and not very well built. Every twat wanted to race or cut you up. Consequently it only lasted about a year. To put in it to context my first car a 1.1 Metro was a more enjoyable car to own! |

Best - current X3 M40i: ticks all the boxes. Hasn't been found wanting in 8 months of ownership so far.
Most missed - Fiat Coupe Turbo Plus: had one of the last off the production line. My first ever performance car. 5 cylinder aggressive turbo engine and straight through exhaust sounded epic. Loads of torque steer = lots of "engaging" moments. Worst - E46 M3: purely because it threw me into a ditch. |

Best. No contest. The current 440gc. Looks great (especially when it's dusk with the sun hitting it, makes the paint work look darker somehow, but with more pop) Goes great. Sounds great. Beastly.
What's not to like except the dull paint work (MG, it's just OK which is not a good start for something this expensive, first and last grey car for me) and the fact it seems to pick up stone chips as if they are going out of fashion. Bmw paint work is really really weak. Last 330d was exactly the same. I Never had this with any of the 6 fords, fiat bravo or alfa guilietta I had before I joined the bmw community in 2015. Most missed. W reg mondeo ST200. My first "performance" car. Loved it loved it loved it. It just had this immediate pull from low down that just told you it wanted to go, hallmark of the normally aspirated 6 cylinder under the bonnet. Coming from a 2.0 mondeo before it, it was night and day. To be honest, it wasn't even that fast and I still remember having a saab 9000 aero or whatever pull away from me leaving me feeling a bit meh... Also the blue colour was lovely. Worst. Ford seirra 1.6GL. My First car, in ford "I like to rust" white. Almost disappeared before my eyes... Still loved it if we are being honest though...

Interesting how many have our current car as the best - to be expected I suppose...
1. Best - Audi SQ5 petrol, current car. Does everything I want of it very well. 1a - best in its day - an E90 330d se manual - just so much better than anything else I had driven before (including an E46 320d MSport), I still remember laughing out loud the first drive and being amazed at the speed and good noise it made... 2. - most missed - difficult one, but probably an E30 318iS in bright red with cross spokes and check sports seats. I was 26 when I got it, the car looked stunning and BMWs were still pretty rare. It felt like it was properly put together unlike the Vauxhall’s that had preceded it. And it was replaced by a Pug 405 diesel estate - the joys of fatherhood! 3. Worst - a toss up between two people carriers, a Vauxhall Sintra 3.0 CDX - great engine, shifted well for a bus, different - but hugely unreliable in the 10 months I had it. Ate fuel too, although not an issue as we had pumps on site... Or a Renault Grand Espace 2.2dt top of the range - like driving a cross between a space ship and your armchair. Huge. Ridiculously slow. Off the road for 6 weeks when the digital speedo failed as it was the drive in the gearbox and needed a new box to solve... |

2) M140 or S2000, very different cars, missed the engine in both of these! 3) Renault 5 1.1 GTL MK1 (my first car). Everything, awful car. |

1) The best one - My current 335D, comfort, power and ease of use but its a close thing over 4 or 5 cars I would say,
2) The one you miss the most (can be number 1), The wifes Pug 205 1.9 CTI. Was written off in front of my wife eyes by a guy jumping a red light (thought it was a filter). It might have been slow (in comparison), heavy but it was everything my misses wanted and she loved it. Being in that kind of accident changed how she drives and shes wary of approaching cars at junctions now. If the incident never occurred, she would still have the car and still be wanting to drive. 3) Your worst - This little bad boy. 9 points this little sucker got me, the speedo didn't work below 40 and the needle just bounced about all the rest of the time. Separate GPS speedos weren't the best back then and it was always Saturday mornings, running the misses to work. ahh loved it but a little bastard thing, dying in the rain, when ever it poured down, but I ran it back and forth to Barnsley for a year from Accrington. Made the most of my AA membership at least. Spent hours rebuilding the interior, swapping in bucket seats, then recaro leather recliners from a rover 200. More speakers and lights than you could shake your fist at.

Best - Porsche Boxster 987 was an 07 plate 2.7 loved every second of ownership. Was cheap to run insure etc had for around 2 years drove it to our wedding so lots of good memories. Sold due to incoming first child and loss of company car due to a job change hence the 430d vert. Sold it for what I bought it for 2 years later!
Most missed - Mini Cooper S 2008 first fast car (coming from a 1.6 fiesta) great fun to drive really reliable sold as got first company car missed it for a long time. Worst - owned car Peugeot 206 1.4 had from new and was first car spent most of the time having warranty work carried out. Had a list as long as your arm replaced! Final straw was when the timing belt slipped and screwed the engine! Company car was a basic Volvo S40 1.6 diesel hated the thing with a passion had for around 6 months. |

Best: My current Shadow Edition 320d. Spec'd with plenty of bells and whistles to keep me entertained. Drives well, got a bit of poke and looks sweet.
Most Missed: My B7 Audi A4 S-Line. Loved it. Miss it, drove great, looked great, never had single issue in 4 years/50000 miles. Milano Red beautiful machine... Worst: I had a 'Y' reg 1.8 petrol Mk1 Focus. The focus had a reputation for driving great but didn't, shit engine, thirsty as hell, had to kick its arse to make it go anywhere, cost me a fortune at MOT time. Well rid. It is my mission to one day have the money to buy back all the cars I've ever owned (The ones that are still going obviously) and restore them all to their former glories... Weird but hey, each to their own right... |

Best: Current 430d GC. Boring but true, just such a complete car. I look forward to driving it every day, nearly 2 years in.
Missed: Probably the first car I bought from new, which was a 1.6 Alfa 147. Not terribly quick, but it was stylish inside and out, and unusually for an Alfa never went wrong. I felt just a little bit cooler every time I drove it. Honourable mention to my 1997 Mondeo Si. Boring car, but an unusual model - it had a 2.5 V6, from the ST I think, just without the fettling and bodykit. It was my first company car when I was in my 20s and it felt like a grown up rocket ship. All about the engine not the car really. Worst: Probably a Mk1 Fiat Bravo. They actually looked reasonable from the outside, but it was terrible to drive and had a horrible plasticky interior. It made me miss my previous car which was a white Rover 414i, so that ought to tell you something.

Best M3. The V8 one.
Missed. Mini JCW. Just so good and making me smile. Worst. Porsche Cayman S. Saying it's the worst is a bit unfair. But it was definitely the most disappointing.

1) Focus RS Mk1 (the proper one). Never owned a car so long, never got bored of it. Tuned from 240bhp (bought it remapped) up to around 350bhp, hybrid turbo, etc. track days and shows.
2) Suppose its the Focus RS, but I dont miss any other car at all so hard to say. I dont miss the car so much as the power. 3) Focus ST250 Mk3 - it was a nice enough car for work and back but not a performance car in my eyes. It couldnt handle the power it had and it wasnt really that powerful. |

With getting on for a hundred cars in over 50 years of car ownership I have to accept the mind plays tricks and I will be viewing the older cars in a fit of nostalgia, but here goes-
The best: Joint: Jag E type 3.8 fhc...the looks, the neutral handling, the sheer sense of occasion... Lotus Elan S3...fitted like a glove and the feeling that you could point it at any corner and it would go round it faster than anything else on the road (at the time!) Missed: Difficult, because there are quite a few (e.g. Cerbera 4.5) but I'll go for the Toyota MR2 mk2 Tbar...for a sports car responsive but smooth and comfortable, well made and with little to fault...and under rated in the sense that had it been an entry level Ferrari,at twice the price,it would have been praised to the skies. The worst: Joint again: Vauxhall Calibra turbo...all understeer and shoddy build,a Cavalier coupe really. Sunbeam Lotus...a cheap and crappy rot box of a small hatchback with only one thing good about it,the Lotus engine. |

Best: Current 335d, it does everything I want without a fuss and is stupidly fast!
Missed: Series 3 V8 landrover. The noise was amazing, went off-roading which was great fun. Also the ability to be able to fix anything that went wrong with it on the drive was great for 17/18 year old Worse: Vauxhall Cavalier, was a tank that refused to go round corners, or stop! what a heap! |
