Funny enough just happened to me as well... 2014 328d with 54k miles. Got a check engine light and took to dealer. Currently waiting their final word but it sounds like it will be full fuel system replacement

Yeah, I am similarly concerned. Unsure if I should offload it or keep it... Probably will end up keeping it, but it is still concerning.

Agreed. I have been doing a bunch of research. Though it sounds my issue is from water from poor quality diesel. Any recommendations from this group on best additives? Thoughts on emulsifiers v demulsifiers?

There is a report out there which details lubricity in the additives. Suffice to say that lubricity wise additive is better than no additive. Now just pick the one with the highest rating.

I want to say archoil is the best based on powerstrokehelp on youtube but I've never used additives. I did just fill up at an ARCO and got horrendous mpg which indicated to me very poor quality fuel which sucks, so I should probably start using something

Thank you. I will do some research. Just out of curiosity what do you use and why?

I have used:

Bell Performance DEEZOL
Power Service Diesel (Grey during summer and white when we travel to the mountains for skiing)
Hot Shots EDT

All work as advertised. What is different is their price per oz. Some are more concentrated than others hence the higher cost. Currently I am using Hot Shots EDT. 1 oz for the 328, 2oz for the 335 and x5, and 6-8oz during track days in the 335.

I’m definitely selling mine before the extended warranty expires...
it seems like this should be a recall instead.

In order to be a recall they'd probably need a better pump to replace it with!

We should get in on the lawsuit against Bosch by the American diesel guys, class action against Bosch for making a pump that is susceptible to damage from the US quality of diesel. I wonder if they will get somewhere. Sure hope so.
Until then, I will look for a lubricant additive too.

Let me know what you go with. I am considering Liqui moly diesel additive since I can easily get it and it seems like a good low cost option to use with every tank

$8500!... Don't worry people, hpfp refurbished... only like 550+ 220-260 per injector, then flush the lines.

Did you do this? Or is this hypothetical?

Seems like it would be necessary to drop the gas tank and clean up everything in there as well. If there's decent filtration in the tank and shavings don't get in the pump, should be just a bunch of labor though. And a smelly job!

Since it's a return system the shavings most likely will get into the tank...

I agree with the above parts list for home repairs, except I would empty the fuel tank, check the low pressure fuel pump intake, and add 2-3 fuel filters at some few thousand miles intervals.
A new HPFP, injectors, and flush plus fuel filters should be enough.

You may be able to do suction and flush the tank in car from the back seat.

Stanadyne diesel fuel additive is one of the leading additives to add for the lubrication lost to ULSD fuel we have in the USA.
That would be a very good preventive measure, as well as NOT purchasing the cheapest diesel you can find. Always buy good name brand from a busy gas station. Avoid grocery store/warehouse club stations.

This is very smart. If this happens again not under warranty this is probably exactly what I would do. Only thing I might add is pulling the in tank fuel pump and checking the screen (If it even has one) for debris/metal. If possible and I can just replace the screen I would otherwise I might replace the in tank fuel pump as well

Yes, agreed. The high cost can be lowered quite a bit, when done individually.

However, I think this can be completely prevented with lubricating the fuel system.
