BM3 stage 1 engine rattle n20
Hi guys new to this forum, I was hoping someone can have an idea of what's going on here. Rattling happens when the engine is warm, most prominent when revving to 2-3k rpm when in park. Mostly happens while driving at low speeds in the city (20-30 mph) and when letting go of the accelerator. The noise tends to echo off parked cars. Bought the car used and has 52k miles, only had the tune for 2k miles. No check engine light. I don't have an exhaust flap/valve in the back and the sound comes from the engine bay.
Few mechanics looked at it and said it was the lifters without much thought and recommend getting a new engine. Rattling is loudest around the last 5 seconds of the video. All I had done was a BM3 stage one and muffler + res delete. The car is now flashed back to stock tune. Any thoughts? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-9trzYdtQQ |

Aye caramba... sounds bad.
Since you're under 70k take it to dealer and tell them you're scared its the timing chain. They will have a look and give you an accurate prognosis... hopefully for free. Make sure to report back with findings. |

Sounds pretty bad tbh, best bet might be to buy a complete engine for ~2k and have them swap it in. |

That thing sounds like it's about ready to give up, sorry to tell you.
If it's only at 52k, depending on what year, hopefully you may still be in a warranty period? That would be the first thing I look into... If not, you're probably looking at a new engine out of pocket.

By how you are describing it, it seems similar to an issue a master BMW tech described as waste gate failure. Pop your hood open and look to the left of your engine block, you might see a loose connector.
The waste gate releases excess boost or pressure generated by the turbo that is not needed by the engine, (caused by deceleration) so maybe that is the cause. Good luck man. Or just goto a tuner and have them rebuild the engine |
