They replaced the EGR cooler as per the recall, replaced the intake manifold as per the recall but didn't do the airbag..win win lose

Mines going in on the 26th of this month for a check, low miles at 33k and i don't lose any water so i suspect it will get an all clear. My concern is what happens if this problem occurs later on, do BMW wash their hands saying we checked it and it was fine?

I just got an all clear. Technician showed me the borescope of my EGR... Mine was super clean and no coolant loss.

I'm guessing this recall wouldn't cover stress cracks on the non-coolant exhaust side? I know mine had two outer cracks in it documented in another thread. If I was losing coolant through it, it was only a slight leak, hard to say as I had another line that was leaking I had to repair. The cabin fumes were very unpleasant at lights though.

Here's to hoping that the replacement design has that cooler bypass pipe anchored a bit better to prevent the cracking.
You can probably convince your service advisor to change the egr cooler for that failure.

I'm having slow coolant loss on mine. I mean really slow, months between it going from Max line to about a cm below min line. I should just keep topping it off until parts come in?

The site contains not only detailed information from BMW on the recall but also contains a full set of instructions on the remedy...including color photos of the process.

My 2014 535d is at the dealer now awaiting their analysis. I have continued to loose coolant over the last six months and there are NO signs of a leak.

Hopefully the dealer and BMW will do the right thing and conform with the entire recall process. More to follow once I have a response from the dealer.

The EGR Cooler fails the inspection

If the EGR cooler fails either during Steps One, Two, Three or Four:
• Submit a TeileClearing PuMA Case (BMW Exhaust Gas after Treatment TC action) with clear, focused,
pictures of the cooler inspection attached and the subject: “Failed EGR Cooler Inspection”.
• TeileClearing will review the case and provide further instructions.


The EGR Cooler passes the inspection procedures

If the EGR cooler passes the inspections:
• Replace the O-ring and reassemble the vehicle, no further action is necessary.

Found out the dealer has not even purchased the borescope needed to make the evaluation.

They put the vehicle under an overnight 'pressure test' according to the service rep and found no leakage...even though the vehicle was found to be low on coolant two times in the last six months. Now they're telling me since there's no leak the EGR cooler is not the problem.

The service rep has stated there may be an issue with a valve in the coolant overflow tank or a possible vacuum lock in the pressurized system.

I'm doubtful of their troubleshooting.

Does anyone have contact for a BMW (US) escalation team? Next step may be to file a formal complaint with NHTSA and FTC.

If the system was pressurized and nothing was found not sure you can go further than that until they get the borescope. Like they said air in the system can cause your coolant level to fluctuate, but it also could happen if the engine is hot

I would just call the BMW N/A number, it will direct your call

Took my 328d to the shop today to swap out the EGR due to poor operability(via check engine light, solid yellow plus occasional idrive drive train malfunction indicator). He claimed the EGR/cooler assembly is on backorder, 1000s of backorders. I then checked the bmw N/A and found the recall notice. Lesson learned, always check that first

Mechanic suggested not driving the car due to further damage to the DPF, so going to call the dealer tomorrow.

Question is: how dangerous to continue driving the car? How quickly will the downstream damage occur with a faulty EGR? This doesn't seem to be related to the cooler recall other than availability of parts. Certainly don't want to do the work twice so sorta stuck here.

Thanks, going to call tomorrow.

The check engine light went on for a couple of days then went off so I thought it was OK. then came back on. No performance issues like the other threads so thinking this is slower clogging of the valve.

i wonder if they'll even do mine because i've never lost any coolant.

the repair guides says to just replace an o-ring if no signs of failure are present lol

That does seem to be the way the recall reads. You could always put off having it checked while keeping an eye on coolant level. At the first sign of coolant loss have the recall check then.

The first clue I got was an increase in sodium in the engine oil analysis during the 49k-57k range. It went from single digits to 30's. I didn't get a low coolant alarm until 63k and had not topped coolant before. Added 16oz at that time. The leak was minimal as a pressure test revealed nothing. From 63k - 74k we lost 8 oz. From 74k - 91k we lost 16oz. From 91k - 92k we lost 8 oz. Sodium jumped into the 70's on the 91k sample. Based on those indications we we stopped driving it at 92k. Our intake was replaced as per the recall but it showed no internal damage, unlike another vehicle brought to the dealer around the same time with a smoldering intake.
We were lucky that the breaking point came around the same time as the recall.
