But this is not good for a manufacturer. It doesn't matter in short term, but surely in long term it turns off people. With all these electronics and sophisticated systems, the resale value will go down drastically because of the high maintenance/repair costs. |

Car just started shaking when I was stopped at a light and a "Drivetrain malfunction" light came on!
From the posts below, it seams to do with "VANOS". Anyone else now what could be the cause? I'm bring it to the dealer tomorrow, should I drive it or tow it? |

I had this same error just this past weekend on my 335. I was in sport + and accelerating quickly when this message appeared. I was low on gas and headed to the gas station and when I say low the light was on and 0 miles to empty. Was only a few hundred feet from the station filled it with shell v power and car ran good as new. Went to dealer who said its fine and because the gas tank doesn't have baffles so since I was low on gas whatever was in the tank sloshed around causing the engine to momentarily not get enough fuel. Long story short car is fine and if your car was low on gas when you were pulling on the highway this may have been the same issue.

I just had this problem occur on my 1/13 build 335i last week. Driving normally, "ding", and there's the message. Shut the car off, waited 30 seconds, turned it on, and no evidence of the fault. 15 minutes later, another one. And then nothing for a few days after that.
Made an appt. at dealer and took it in - car only has 2700 miles on it, and no other apparent problems. Turns out it was a faulty auxiliary cooling fan - the smaller one that the M-Sport cars get, not the main fan - and the biggest challenge was finding one. My dealer didn't have one, nor did the dealer I bought it from up in Austin, and it took nearly a day, but they located one at a dealership in VA (although they didn't want to give it up despite having 4 in stock instead of 1 like everyone else who had one). It arrived here yesterday, they installed it and tested it and no more malfunctions. What I heard along the way was that BMW was aware of the defective fans and is going to have a big shipment of them going out a the end of this month, but they probably won't arrive at the dealerships until around July 10. So - if you encounter this issue, be prepared to wait. Fortunately, this didn't affect how the car drove at all - no limp mode, no reduced driveability. Best thing to do if they don't have the fan in stock is schedule your appt. for after they arrive, or your car will sit at the dealership until it does.

I got my car Friday and the car has 46 miles on it and I got the drivetrain malfunction. I will be having the dealer pick the car up from my office tomorrow it was pretty scary. Like the OP, I switched from D to Sport but I was stopped at a stop sign (possibly not 100% stopped but I think I was. Luckily, no cars were coming as I was making a left turn and that could have caused a huge accident.
My screen was exactly what the photo on the top of this page was. I guess there are a number of issues that cause this? Having a drivetrain malfunction before I hit my 50th mile in the car is infuriating. Luckily its a lease |

I'm dealing with the same "Drivetrain Malfunction" error on my 11-day old 328xi after putting 700 miles on it (took a bit of a roadtrip this weekend). The error came up when I put the car into reverse to parallel park. Car went into limp mode. Turned it off, waited a while, turned it on but still had the error.
I was able to drive it to the Service Center. Their initial diagnosis was that it was a cylinder misfire. Now they're telling me that the Vanos Solenoid has to be replaced, and that there's one more test that they have to do when the car is cold to see if anything else needs to be done. It goes without saying that I'm a little upset that this is happening on my first BMW. |

Got this same "Drivetrain Malfunction" on my five-day-old-under-1000-mile 328i on Saturday. Car was driving fine, I shut it off to get a drink and when I started the car again the error message came on. Just got a call from the dealer saying once again, VANOS problem. While I was there there were an alarmingly high amount of F30 328is in the shop and I can't help but wonder if this is going to lead to a massive recall.

I "THINK" I'm having the same issue with mine. I can only describe my issue as a very slow shaking while driving under hard acceleration. If I mash the throttle while almost stopped, I get a very slow response from the engine. If I mash the throttle while on the highway, 50% of the time it will start shaking, it's weird and disturbing. No error messages from i-drive though (sadly). Called my local stealership and they told me if they couldn't find any problem with the car, they would have to charge me $35/hr for time spent. Ridiculous if you ask me.

There's definitely a problem with the car - you're most likely getting a misfire from the way you describe your symptoms. If you dealer won't diagnose the car without charging you, I'd find another dealer! Hey, at least it's not $135/hour!

Low gas warning
I had the error occur approx a week, ago while I was letting a friend driv emu car for the first time.( I haven't let anyone drive it but myself and wife lol)... I was very low on fuel and had warned my friend maybe we should add some before we pulled out of the gas station parking lot. He said he just wanted to drive up the street and back to feel what it was like. On the way back the message popped up about the drivetrain malfunction etc nd he said he felt a little vibration. The car said approx 2 miles to empty. We returned to gas station less than mile away and I filled car up with premium 93 octane as I always do.( not sure why some posters say there car says minimum 89. My gas tank clearly says premium gas with a 91 minimum octane. However most mids are 89 and premium is 93 octane in my areas, so I always use 93...... After filling it up, I started the engine and the same error popped up very briefly and then it cleared on its on and has never came back on. I just got back from a family vacation to Panama City Beach and the drive approximately 600-700 round trip and I had zero problems. I have a 8AT with the paddle shifters and drove in every mode after and did plenty of WOT, with zero issues. Apparently it's an error when you get too low on gas and the engine isn't getting proper fuel. I saw another poster in this thread that posted the pictures of his code in the dash and I saw the DTE said 7 miles. This error was probably only due to low fuel. Hope this helps.

The computer is saying this car's out of gas and you should drive moderately to stretch out what little you have. It's shuddering because it's hungry.

Wow that's good to know. I never like to run my tank too low (to keep the floating particles out of the fuel filters), but it's good to know that this is the result when you push it too far.

This alert came on for me a couple of days ago after only putting about 1200 miles on my brand new 328i. I ended up taking my car in the next day. Turns out that there was a Valve Leak which was making this "Drivetrain Malfunction" message pop up. They told me that its going to take about a week or so to get this replacement part.

My 2012 328i just had this failure as well. I have a 6MT so nothing to do with the auto gearbox. I had it in Sport mode, it had been the entire hour long I had been driving it. I pulled out onto the highway and accelerated fairly hard as I got up into some higher RPMs all of a sudden it just gave out and started flashing error messages at me. Pulled over and it was idling all wrong and not willing to accelerate. Sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders.
It is interesting to note that I have had my car for well over a year and it has a bit of 20,000 miles on it and I have never seen this before. Going to call the dealer tomorrow and schedule an appointment. |
