The cap was a major error, especially in an area where the market is global, and has contributed to this crisis by altering the balance of supply and demand.

The government is reported as looking for some way of protecting the lower paid and leaving the rest to the vagaries of the markets in the long term. Keeping a cap in place will only add to the long-term issues as global markets the companies buy supplies in do not have caps. Government cannot nationalize a global market

My view is it’s fine keeping the heating on when you are in and using it. However if you are out for the day, you’ll use less energy reheating the house than heating it all day.
Then again, insulation is key - it would be expensive keeping a pan or kettle of water on the boil for just when you need it but boiling water taps are negligible costs to run.
I'm not saying what I am doing is the cheapest, just that this year is working out cheaper than last (in terms of the amounts of energy being consumed) and that this is the major change I have done... But it could be this year is on average warmer (and so needs less heating input on average) or I may be accepting. slightly lower overall temp than last... I may even be being mikron careful and not bleeding off heat by leaving doors/windows open unnecessarily...

When I am away for any length of time, I do turn down the thermostat... But I would not for just, say, a day out, as I would prefer the house already up to temp when I got back...

Nov & Dec last year were extremely mild, there were plenty of days where our heating didn't even come on, been cold the last few weeks though.

This is where smart heating comes in to its own.

Interested to know others gas usage?

Over winter my smart meter has been telling me I range between 25-60 kwh for gas per day - the difference almost all down to how cold it is outside.

4 bed house.. What are others seeing?

Totally impossible to make a comparison and 25-60kwh per day is a massive range. In fact my gas usage for the year is between 10 and 65 kWh per day let alone winter.

That's amazingly low, I persume a newish house?

145kWh per day average gas usage for December, similar to last year. 5 bed bungalow, very efficient boiler but the rooms are as well insulated as a cardboard box.

Electricity usage interesting was less than 20kWh per day, and that includes charging the EV. Its the doubling of the gas prices that's going to really hammer everyone come next winter.

1950's.. but I've been busy insulating since last year. Boiler is fairly new though and I've added smart heating which I'm pretty ruthless with

Wow, have you got any insulation??! Bringing our extension up to spec made a massive difference!

Either I am tight or some of you have 300 kids and a sieve for a house

December:
250kw electric / 31 Days = 8kw a day electric
875kw gas / 31 Days = 28kw a day gas

November:
211 electric / 30 days = 7kw a day electric
557kw gas / 30 days = 18.5kw a day gas

4 year old 'new' build property - dual zone Nest setup - three story, 3 bed semi-detached - 2 humans. 2 dogs. WFH every day since 2020.

Yes.

Goes down to around 10-12 kWh per day in summer when we only use gas for hot water and cooking.
Winter max is 65kwh.

Elec is around 12kwh per day rising slightly to around 15 in winter.

Either you live in a thermos flask, wear your Canada goose in the hoose, or have another means of generating power.

I have no idea. Currently sat here in a pair of jeans, t-shirt and a hoody as been in since we went out for lunch

We have dual zone Nest and a un-vented cylinder thing for all our hot water, and because there's only two of us it does give us all our hot water for showers and kitchen tap usage based on a single 30 min boost - so apart from the 30 mins for that at 2130 everynight the only gas we use in any quantity is the house heating.

Currently sat here now, both zones are 19 degrees - heating has been on for 3.5hrs around 9am to get the house to 21 and its dropped 2 degrees since around 11am...

Pretty much the same as me, 3 bed semi 5 years old, 2 people.

Average over last 60 days is 27kwh gas and 7kwh electricity.

Interestingly, same period last year was 36kwh gas and 9 kwh electricity according to latest bill.

Sub 5kWh electricity usage over 24hrs, thats sub 200watts/hr drain. Unless you have no electrical appliances that seems pretty unbelievable.

I'm amazed anyone can run a home on around 5kWh per day these days, how do you do it? No washing machine/dryers, dish washer, freezers or cooking?

Our 4-bed detached home works out between 9 - 10kWh per day average, over the year. Plus the heating/water.

Our weekend retreat / holiday home in Anglesey uses 1.5-2kWh per day when empty - just the fridge and fridge/freezer, a couple of low energy light bulbs on hive timer, and the central heating boiler / hive system (it's oil fired heating), and that's very limited running when it's set at 13C !

Not sure how a 'proper' occupied house can run on 5kWh per day

Yep, you're right matey I missed a month (March) which was on the old bill and then a confirmed reading until June...so add a month, give or take so up to 7 plus ish for that period by my working out. That was my last official reading the rest have been estimates . Kids have gone which makes a massive difference, I'm also a bit of a zealot since the lad went off to uni one year leaving his PC 'mining'.

You can all breath easy now...especially those 500 miles north
