N20 oil consumption issue?

Hi all,

N20 engine 13 328xi approx 79k

I seem to be having a bit of an oil consumption issue. I do oil change every 6-7k last one was 3k ago. About 1000km ago I had to add approx 300ml of oil because oil level measurement said it was more than halfway (but not quite) at minimum. Measured after and it was back at max.

I check my level measurement again today and it seems like it is back down to about the same spot. I did coolant service about 1500km ago. Engine oil temp is normal around city but I do notice that it jumps close to 120 but fluctuates when driving on highway so it does seem to be operating at a slightly higher temp but still within spec.

I’ve never really had to top up oil before. This would be the third time ever that I would have needed to top up.

Been using Castrol Edge 5w-30 synthetic...

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Have you checked for any obvious leaks?

First one (and easiest to identify) would be the oil filter housing.

As far as flashing a light down on the bay and seeing leaks not really much. What would be the easiest way to spot a leak from the filter housing?

I would check for any traces of oil near the filter cap (big black cap) located on the engine itself. After that I would highly recommend checking for damaged/leaking gaskets. This may require disassembly of the engine itself depending on where the leaks are coming from if one should exist.

Do an oil change with Liqui Moly MolyGen.

If you have a leak it can be seen under UV light.

Check the turbo oil line as well. If you have the old one still, which you likely do, then it's possible to leak from there due to the lack of a return valve.

Hi,

My F25,2.0L has recently got a little blue smoke at startups (after sitting over night) and also its oil consumption has become abnormal for a while (0.7Lit/1000km). I guess the blue/white smoke should be as a result of leaking oil from turbo oil feed line during night into turbine housing. I did the compression test and it was was good (almost 140 in all cylinders). There is no noticeable oil leakage in engine compartment or underneath the car. My car has the old version inlet pipe without check valve!! ans I decided to replace the new oil inlet for fixing those issues.

My question is that are you aware of similar cases in which replacing the turbo oil feed line has resolved both problems (blue smoke and oil consumption)? Was the turbo replacement necessary in those cases as well?

Your reply will be highly appreciated.

P.S: Honestly, your car has amazing modifications

Check the rear of the engine by the last spark plug coil. My valve cover gasket failed at around 70~80k and had a pool of oil. Got it replaced under the SULEV (n26).
