For the last year I started working on my own car and generally I fixed everything that I had in mind, however, I am still a noob. Right now the breaks are almost done and want to upgrade them, otherwise the replacement process is fairly easy and straightforward.

Currently I own an F34 with a 2.0 liter diesel engine, however in the future I want to upgrade to 3.0 liter, so keeping that in mind, I want to have a bigger breaks. I am planning to keep my car as stock as possible (no tracks nor racing), I just want to make lots of roadtrips with it (for example, I drove this car across almost 80% of the countries in Europe).

My car right now has the two piston calipers, I want to upgrade to 4 pistons and have bigger rotors. I was wondering what size do you recommend me? I want to run 19 inch wheels in summer and 18 inch wheels on winter. Also, if it's not much to ask, what brands are usually best for this? I kind of like Brembo, but honestly, I think it's to much overkill for a roadtrip car.

F3x brakes can be a bit confusing because there are many different brakes installed by BMW. The F3x came with four different size front brakes, and three different rear brakes, in certain front/rear combinations.

Each diameter rotor has a specific caliper associated with it. So if you measure your rotor diameter you will know exactly which calipers you have. Please see photos for how to measure right on the car without removing the wheel.

Many of the calipers look identical so it’s easy to make a mistake trying to judge by looking at the caliper. It’s important to measure the rotor/disc diameter to know exactly which factory brakes your car has. Then the upgrade paths are more obvious. What are the last 7 digits of your VIN so I can look up parts?

You mean to check the calipers so I can identify if I have a 4 piston or a 2 two piston setup?
