Ive been experiencing a rattling noise when accelerating with light throttle above 2000rpm with it being most noticeable in first and second.
- Harder to hear in that rpm range when driving above 40-50km as wind noise and cars engine noise masks it.
- It isn't clearly noticeable but it is defiantly there and doesn't sound right.
- It's also there when revving in park or neutral but less noticable then when I drive

Sound clips:
Rattling is noticeable just when car becomes visible in the video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JwL...ew?usp=sharing
When revving and raisin rpms slowly and holding it where I heard the rattle: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uUX...rh7wkMjw1/view

Other:
Just replaced the tensioner, belt and pulley which made no difference to the rattling noise when accelerating.

I tried this fix but using a 2.5 lb weight ziptied to the low pressure hose and it made no difference (other users in the thread also did the same and it stopped the rattling they were having) Also think I would've noticed this earlier if it was the issue.

Anyone have any input?

Have a 6/13 build and tried this fix as well using a 2.5lb weight but sound was still there.

I just watched the video. Very difficult to isolate the sound. Did you record it with windows down?

I suggest to park next to a long wall, lower the windows, drive slowly and try recording the sound again.

The sound will bounce of the wall and the recording will be amplified.

checked under the hood and the tensioner is wiggling and theres a ticking sound, with ac on its moving like crazy

but would that also cause rattling when accelerating lightly above 2k?

Just updated the first post with recent updates, would be great if anyone can share their input on potential problems that may cause rattling when accelerating like this in this rpm range

If helps if you actually post new things you have done as new posts so that we can see chronologically what has happened. We can't see what in the OP you just edited for example.

Update:

Just had the car checked at BMW dealer and they didnt notice anything while driving or checking under the car

Went on a drive with the shop foreman and he heard the sound as well. He explained that it could be the flap in the wastegate opening/closing with the built up pressure causing the rattle which occurs only when holding the rpms at certain points around 2-3k or accelerating with light throttle around 2-3k rpm, sometimes downshifts which bring the rpm to that range as well. He also said my ER chargepipe has made this sound more noticeable as well.

So he sort of said its normal, and blamed it on the CP?

It's really hard to hear in the videos, but i dont think i hear that sound on my car at all.

Not necessarily blamed the CP but said it makes it more noticeable. He said what im hearing is bcuz of pressure building up and wastegate valve opening/closing as result of me purposely accelerating slower than usual and holding the throttle in certain rpm ranges

And yeah its hard to explain to someone how to replicate it or hear on video but its definitely there when I show someone it while I drive

Sort of a continuous "rrrttt" rattle type sound when in that rpm range with light throttle in 1st and 2nd gear

This was the first time i noticed this sound over few years of ownership. They said they checked everything and theres no major concerns that could cause this, guess I have to just trust that theres nothing wrong

Whenever you get a chance see if you notice that as well?

Another sound clip: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GEH...ew?usp=sharing

you'll need volume on full

you can hear at the beginning when I accelerate or downshift at the end, 'rrtt' type sound

other updates: noticed some exhaust rattle on cold start seems like its from left pipe
also feel some slight vibration in drivers seat on cold start

Exhaust rattle on cold start is common from the valve on that side. You can go out and listen for yourself as soon as you start the car and confirm it. I brought my car in under warranty for that and they said they fixed it with a software update lol. It actually did become less common (from 100% of the time to say, 10% of the time) but never fixed it completely. There is also a mechanical fix that comes from a small little metal spring i think (google search for thread).

Not sure about the vibration in driver seat... might just be a rough cold start idle? Do you have cold start disabled with a tune or anything?

Yeah exhaust rattle doesnt seem like the problem

My muffler delete used part of oem f30 muffler so it had the valve part as well. Now i got my stock muffler on and I am still hearing the rrrt type sound while driving

Im not sure what would explain this rattle type sound while driving or downshifting. It just doesn't seem like its normal to me.

My 2013 f30 335i (pneumatic waste-gate) has started to make this "ticking" or "rattling" noise upon startup. It also has started making a "metallic rattling" or "metallic vibrating" noise when accelerating from a stop.

I've attached videos where you can hear the rattling upon startup and another one where you can CLEARLY hear the metallic vibration at 2k-3k rpm's when accelerating.

PLEASE ADVISE if you have any ideas of what this might be.

1. Vibration/Rattling at 2k-3k RPMS when accelerating from stop:

https://youtube.com/shorts/MeKYDv978a8?feature=share

2. Rattling/Clicking/Chugging noise when idling after startup:

I think I have the same rattling noise as you first video. I will start to look into it. If you find something I'm all ears On my car I can clearly identify that the sound (metalic rattling) comes from the front right, I suspect something in the motor bay near the cockpit.

Has anyone figured this out? I have just noticed it on my 440, recored with my phone under the hood while driving. You can check the video here:

First you'll hear a higher type of noise, this one I ignore because I don't even hear it inside.

What bothers me is the lower type, rattling like in the video desc, so under acceleration from low RPMs with throttle ~ 30-50%.

Anyone has the same and figured it out? Is this how this engine normally operates?
