Changed Steering Rack Bush - Stiff steering

Hi,
So I’ve replaced my steering rack bush with the new one, since i was getting some looseness and minor knocking. That fixed those two issues.

However, I asked the mechanic to torque it at 70Nm, as that’s the only spec I was able to find online. I know many say its too much... but I wanted to keep the OEM spec... if that’s what they are.
Long story short, my steering was very stiff and while driving, after I turn, the steering would not realign back straight by itself if I don’t move it.

3 weeks in it got much better, Im almost happy with the handling, except for the when I turn while driving, the steering would realign straight by itself but stops 10 degrees short.
I'm going back to the mechanic on Friday for an oil change - should I ask him to loosen it up, or will it get better with time?

What has been your experience and torque specs you used?

I have a F32 (2014 435i coup)

Thanks,
M

So with the steering rack bushing, you can "overtighten" it.
I replaced mine about 2 years ago and torqued it to about the 70nm you mentioned and the steering rack wouldn't return to center. A few guys on youtube and the forums said the same and backed off the cap/screw thing 1/4 turn at a time until it improved.

So I got under the car and backed it off 1/4 turn until it went back to normal. I think it was roughly 1/2 of a turn in my case.

Hello All, I apologize if I high jack this tread.
When the OP says it replaced it's steering rack Bush, which part exactly was replaced?

I am asking cause I have had an issue since ownership of a 2012 335i Sedan RWD that I hear a cluck in the driver's side tire, shock or something. This happens when I go slowly over a noticeable bump, like a driveway that is like 2 inches above payment, to a speed bump.
This also happens periodically, from going from Reverse to forward, sometimes.
I kind feel as if something big moved. like the shock tower top bolts, but they didn't.

Steering cap and screw is the cap with 3 holes on the Steering rack itself right?

Thank you in advance.

Those issues sound like the ones I had before I replaced the steering rack bush.
There’s many videos on YouTube on how to replace it so you can see exact where it’s located there. But it is located under that cap with the 3 holes.
I bought the kit with the tool and took it to my mechanic. Was done in 20 min

For anyone stumbling across this in the future- You’re not supposed to leave it at 70 Nm. You’re supposed to tighten it to 70 Nm, immediately back off about 60 degrees, and then if you have the special tool, measure clearance. If you don’t have the special tool, you’re supposed to feel it out.

I have replaced those parts (repair kit available commonly online) but eventually still minor sound coming from the rack.

Anyone know how to solve this? Workshop telling me have to change whole steering rack.

Heres the place where the knocking sound comes from.
