N55 Weird Engine Noise
Hi,
I started noticing a weird noise form the engine while driving and wanted to see if anyone knew or experienced this before https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qIY80twOGbA It can be heard early in the video and near the end around the belt tensioner/front right side of the engine by the oil filter housing. Before this, I had a the electric fan fault that occurs on earlier N55 seen here https://www.tsbsearch.com/BMW/SI-B12-25-13 Scanned for faults using BM3 and no codes there. I'll try bimmerlink later. Do you guys think it's the tensioner? I replaced it a year ago, but who knows. Could it be the fan? It seems more on the engine side than the front bumper area though. Any inputs or experiences would be appreciated.. |

It's more like a helicopter sound near the belt tensioner
I replaced it and the sound is still there. Maybe I can record another video too. It seems to be from that general area. Since it's not the tensioner or the idler pulley(I was messing with the idler pulley while changing the tensioner), then hpfp? Vacuum pump? When I move the camera towards the injector side, it sounds normal so the sound is originating from the front right side of the engine...just don't know what The valve cover gasket is done for though, as I'm getting leaks/smoke |

Here's another vid. You can hear this lower toned, constant noise. I move the cam over towards the cylinders and you can hear that it sounds like normal N55 injector noise...when I bring the camera back to the other side of the engine, you can clearly hear something different. The noise speeds up as the car revs up too. When I unplugged the vacuum line from the pump to the valve cover, the noise continues. I can also hear/feel the vacuum and suction from that tube so I am still wondering what it can be. |

Update:
Indy shop thinks it's the eccentric shaft or hydraulic lifters. The noise was isolated to the top end with a stethoscope which coincides with what I thought regarding it not likely being rod knock...not that that would have altered the price cause the estimate cost is not cheap....shaft alone online is 1200 from FCP...9xx from autohaus. Sigh |

I have this issue, the sound is louder with more engine rpm.
I discovered that the Exhaust camshaft, hydraulic lifter, and its hand (holder) having issues. You can try to have a look over that part. Good luck |
