Engine oil/coolant Temps B47, Any Knowledge?

Hi,

So I’m an owner of a late 2016 318d with the B47. Had the car a couple of months but with weather changing recently I’ve been paying more attention to the oil gauge.

I’ve read most models operate at 100°c oil temp, give or take a few. The owner’s manual is obviously useless and just says the correct temp should be ‘in the middle or left half’ of the gauge, so could be anything from 50-100. Thanks BMW.

So, I’m operating at about 80°c oil temp after about 10 miles of any kind of driving, and it is fairly steady at that temp, sometimes goes up slightly, never drops below 75°c though. The car warms up quickly (within about 5 mins I’m comfortable in -°c weather). When I checked the coolant temp/engine temp on the secret screen, it was around 77-90. The coolant didn’t seem to go above that after about an hour of London city driving, fluctuated though within that range by a fair bit.

Since I’ve been looking out for the gauge, it’s been to 100°c approx twice, once on the motorway at 70mph, in ecopro, and once whilst sat in a London traffic jam for about an hour standstill. I am getting very good fuel economy (rarely below 70mpg on the motorway).

Is this a common problem? I haven’t found anything online for the B47 and thermostats that would suggest it’s a common problem. The thermostat itself looks fairly impossible to break as its spring operated depending on temp. Any help would be great!

Thanks

So update for whoever finds this in the distant future with the same problem: it was the thermostat! Very simple fix, there was an o ring that was a pain in the arse on the bigger hose of the thermostat, but it goes under the plastic ring inside the hose.

That took 2 1/2 hours to figure out, the swap took about 1 1/2 hours, just some 10mm bolts

Good luck!

Yes, mine sits at exactly 100°c now that the ‘stat is fixed.
Only takes like 20 mins to get to that too and that’s in -°c weather.
