Oil recommendation confusion
I’ve got an n20 2014 328i xdrive. Depending on which site I’m on, I’m getting conflicting info on recommended oil.
I’m using LiquiMoly. Last oil change the mechanic put 0w20 toptec. When I try to order that, depending on the site, it says that oil is incorrect and recommends molygen 5w40. I’m just outside of Seattle. What is the correct oil? Manual doesn’t mention 5w40. Last edited by pnwf30; 12-08-2024 at 02:23 PM.. |

You shouldn't be using 0w-20. It may be OK, but it may not. The acceptable viscosities are listed in your manual. An oil seller can only recommend one of their oils if it meets the BMW LL-01 certification. LiquiMoly 5w-40 does, their other offerings don't, which explains that. For all around use 5w-30 is best, and just about every good fully synthetic oil meets or beats the LL-01 specs.

I wouldn't put much stock in that. BMW started using 0w-20 a few years back for the sole purpose of increasing their CAFE numbers. Dealers started using it across the board so they wouldn't have to stock more than one oil in bulk. It's not like 0w-20 didn't exist in 2014, it did. If BMW didn't recommend it then I wouldn't use it now.

LL01 or LL04 only for the N20.
Plenty of options at Walmart. M1 FS or ESP in 40 or 30 grade. Pennzoil Euro L 5w30, Pennzoil Euro 5w40, Castrol 0w30, Valvoline Euro 5w40, Quaker State Euro 5w40.
