PSA: Use your Mac to flash MHD!

Not sure if anyone else has realized this yet, but if you have a recent Apple computer, you can flash MHD with it instead of your phone!

The newer Apple (M1 and on) can run iOS apps, including MHD. Because I am cheap, I didn’t feel like paying $80 for an MHD WiFi adapter and, since I use my Mac for ESYS and ISTA, I already had a ENET cable and USB-C to Ethernet adapter. I simply plugged my computer in to the car, MHD recognized and connected to it, and did my first flash (initial/full/long write) and it took less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds!

MHD advertises 30-45 minutes for a wired connection, and like 8-9 minutes for their WiFi adapter. My guess is iPhone wired flash time is slower because of the bandwidth limitations of the lightning port, while the Mac is able to take full advantage of the wired connection speed and do everything almost instantly.

I used a battery charger but TBH probably didn’t need to with how fast it flashed, I was prepared for it to take 40 minutes

A long flash with their red wi-fi adapter takes me roughly 3-4 minutes, a general update/flash is 10-15 seconds max. Prior to getting this adapter the OTG wire and a real cheap amazon fire tablet was my go to, that was painful.. I remember doing a long flash by accident once on a motorway pull in, 55 minutes I sat there with no battery charger
