When should new TPMS sensors be installed?
One set of wheels has factory TPMS sensors that are 11 years old and driven for 82,000 miles. Another set of wheels have aftermarket TPMS sensors that are 5 years old and driven for 10,000 miles.
I presume that TPMS sensors and batteries are activated more when driven a lot. Is it difficult or expensive to change TPMS sensors by temporarily removing the tires? If so, the TPMS sensors might be changed on the 11 year old wheels (82,000 miles) when new tires are purchased early next year. What do you think? |

I believe that TPMS use Lithium batteries, which have a normal lifespan of 10 years. For the F3x cars (actually, most cars), the battery isn't replaceable, as the electronics and sensors also have a limited lifespan.
Replace the 11-year-old TPMS when you change the tires (sooner if they start to fail). The 5-year-old TPMS should be fine for a while.

I've just stuck 2013 rims on 2019 F30/1.. aware of the above info about a change in 2014 and the valve sensors that need to be installed.
Specific question, would my car just pick up the presence of the new sensors? Or do I need to get complicated with coding etc... |

The TPMS should match your make and model and then once fitted, you just do a reset through the iDrive menu and then about 10 minutes of driving. It did hang around 49% complete for a few minutes and I thought it was going to fail - but it then quickly went to 100%, and all has been fine. |
