Do I sell my car?
I have a 328i 2015 and it has the common timing chain issue. A shop near me said it’s not broken yet but parts of it are and it has some damage. He also said he suggests selling it because with some other stuff that needs to be done it would cost $10k to fix. What should I do? I love the car and have spent $2k on mods and I don’t wanna flush it all down the drain but I also can’t spend $10k to fix it. I need help or suggestions please.

Sorry to hear about the timing chain issue you are having. What exactly has broken? 10k seems very high unless you need a motor replacement but even then, that's high for an N20/N26 motor. Typically, a timing chain job on this engine is about $3500. No small amount but does fix the issue of the timing chain rattle. If you don't want to sell the car but it needs a major repair, there isn't much you can do other than park it and look at it until you are ready to fix it.

It doesn't cost anywhere near 10K to change chains. That is classic pricing you out of a job because they don't want the work or can't be bothered, or lack the skill.
Competent shops can drop the engine and subframe down in 2 hours, swap the chain gear out and back in again in a day. If you have the space and some tools, it could be a good learning opportunity and save a huge bag of cash. BMWs are VERY easy to work on. |
