Hi All,

Noticed a rattle coming from what looks like the air intake pipe, can somebody with a 330d check if they have the same issue? and or if they have a rubber clip or support stopping the pipe from vibrating, as mine seems to hang loose over the top of some metal pipe work

i am just wondering if maybe i can fix this, or maybe a part has fallen off??

Very interesting. Both our 335d and 435d have exactly the same rattle and it is very pronounced and, frankly, sounds cheap.

Initially I thought it was the actual electrical box that's directly above as I was able to stop the rattling when I pressed against the internals in much the same way as you did on the inlet pipe. However no matter what action I took to dampen it, it continued. I feel more convinced that the problem was just as you pointed out.

If it is the pipe, the fix should be really easy by sticking some Velcro (just the soft side) between the pipe and the electrical box. I shall do this on the weekend now. In fact, 435 in for a service tomorrow, so will make BMW investigate it too and see if we come to the same conclusions.

I just checked mine and i had the rattle too, not quite as pronounced as yours though.

So i pulled the pipe out (use flat head screwdriver to prise both side out) then stuck a strip of velcro (the fluffy half) to the top of the pipe and it's completely cured it!

Mine is going back to the dealers, so we will see what they do.

if you turn the fans and radio off in the car you can also hear it, the design is piss poor, should have been a rubber section instead.

Your fix is probably going to be better than the dealer so i may cancel and do it myself (as i have a horrible idea that they may try something dumb, like cable tie), looks like the stuff BMW has used is either too thin or has not been applied correctly or wears out after a few 1000 miles

Just got to make sure that adhesive is strong and there is no way that can be sucked into the engine, although i am guessing the filter box will stop it, any other suggestions on fixing this??

If you look at my pics it appears BMW knew about the rattle and put some thin sticky felt type stuff on the corners, just not thick enough to do the job properly though!

Yep that is what i guessed, i wonder if that felt has a part number

I am guessing this is not a know fault as the stealer has asked to have my car for the day! i think i may fix this one myself.

Hi,

only concern is that the Velcro could fall off and get sucked into the engine, maybe remove the BMW felt, clean the plastic with some IPA and then apply the Velcro or find something with some stronger adhesive. As i am guessing that the Velcro will eventually ended up

a) falling offf
b) beaten so flat that it needs replacing again

It's stuck very well, and with the bit that's still visible there should stop it from wanting to go inside the pipe. It's up to you though obviously.

Mine was loose, took it to the dealer and they tightened it with an extra clip. They told me it happened because my car was to low.. Clearly not !

Further to my earlier post, the 435 was checked for it's rattle - dealer said they'd fixed it and that it was caused by the airbox which had come loose!

Bump - just discovered I have the same issue. Has the Velcro trick lasted?

Never mind...just used some 3M rubber tape, sticks like sh*t to a blanket although it’s quite thick so was a bit of a bodge squeezing it back in. Will wait and see how it fares

Good to see the quality we all pay for shining through

Still, it gives me a chance to fix something simple on my car, which makes me think I know what I’m doing when it comes to engines. Which I most definitely don’t.

Ah yes, 40/50k for a premium brand car that needs tape to stop the doors creaking and Velcro in the engine bay to stop rattles ...nice!

When do you get this 'rattle' & is a problem with all diesel F30's?

Reason I ask is that I've noticed a slight rattle on mine, typically it only happens for a few miles after start up & on a certain rev range - sounds almost like the air filter housing is vibrating...
