Well done. I just tightened the nut on mine around 1/8th of a turn. The knocking has reduced but not disappeared, and it's only added a little stiction to the steering.

This is interesting - mine has just developed a knock on full lock (but only on full lock and irrespective of which way the wheels are turned). Happens both going forwards and in reverse. Is this likely to be the same thing.
Need to go and rock my steering wheel I guess. Due in next week to finally get the winter wheels taken off, so can ask Park Lane to check.

Hmm.. I think given the choice between a slight knock if I rock the steering wheel Left and right (which you shouldn’t do anyway) and added stiction I’d keep the slight knock. Considering I’ve found a large percentage of cars on the road over say 6 years or so old seem to have a slight knock on the steering if you rock the steering wheel left and right moderately hard.

A bit of investigating has also shown that it only happens with the steering on full lock to the left (and happens either in Drive or Reverse). If you drive the car in a circle on full lock, it's a kind regular clacking noise like some component has come loose and is catching and releasing as the wheel rotates.

Of course it’s different. ^Some of what you describe is completely different to the COMMON problem when it ONLY knocks when you rock the steering wheel left and right. I’ve highlighted the parts that describe a different problem to the common one. Although it sounds like you have 2 problems going on there, the common problem with the knock off the pinion and a mystery problem that is completely different and could be unrelated. I would get it looked at. |

It is being checked out - car's going in on Friday morning to get it looked at under warranty. As regards the part number quoted above, I enquired about it with Battersea BMW's parts department, who repliedby email: "This kit is listed in our parts system as a ‘solution for vehicles with acoustic irregularities’, there are repair instructions that our workshop team would need to follow for warranty purposes to justify this but we’d need to leave it to them to run the procedure." We shall see.

Your problem sounds more severe than the common knock while rocking the steering that these cars get. I reckon it’s either a progression of the problem where extra symptoms have developed or there’s something else going on as well. If it’s under warranty you’ll get a new rack fitted. How does anyone notice the knock when rocking the steering with the engine off? It's not something I ever do to my car?

Personally I don’t think you should be doing that anyway though, it’s not designed to be rocked left and right while stationary, particularly with the engine off, but I wouldn’t personally be concerned if mine did it with the engine off and it wasn’t knocking at all whilst actually driving the car! |

Does anyone who has experienced this issue noted that this was outside temperature related?
My car only makes a knocking sound when its hot, the morning after knocking is gone... not sure if its the steering rack part. Car goes in for checkup next week. |

I noticed mine when cleaning the car. Just wiping the steering wheel with a soapy cloth caused it to knock on both mine and the Mrs' cars!

Just back from dropping the car off, and as I was demonstrating the clacking sound to the service guy by turning the car in the drop-off area while he stood nearby, a passing technician called out "sounds like a loose brake shield"...
Let's see. I asked them to also rock the steering and check that knock.

So, just had an update. To quote from the email I got from the service consultant, the cause is "the lower damper fitted in the upper section of the steering rack, which we are replacing".

I also read that there can be issues with some mounting screws on the steering rack. And that they did a recall for this? Anyone more info? Thx |
