N57 EGR cooler - Stainless or Aluminium
I have the Borg Weiner updated one which appears to be a stainless carcass, but are the cooling fins inside aluminium or also stainless?
I've just started getting the dreaded 290900 air mass fault. After some logging, I can see the DDE is shutting the EGR valve off when the EGR cooler bypass switches to the cooler at a certain water temp, so I reckon it's clogged. I was thinking of soaking it in over cleaner for a few hours, but can't do that if the fins are aluminium. Anyone know for sure? Cheers |

I would have thought the cooler would all be made of the same material, otherwise there's the risk of galvanic corrosion.

You would think so, but stainless is quite expensive and we know how car makers like to cut corners
It was the original Korean ones that broke apart and dumped coolant, so maybe they were the bimetal ones? The Borg Warners are an improved design, but still clog up. Tempted to just map get EGR mapped out by BW Chiptune tbh, but I'll try a clean first. |

To close this out, I answered my own question yesterday. The recall Borg Warner EGR coolers are indeed 100% stainless steel, therefore strong oven cleaners won't harm it.
