Winter Tyres - Staggered Set Up
Hi all
I currently have Michelin Pilot Sport 4s all-round on this staggered setup: 255/35/19 225/40/19 I am looking to get some all-season/winter tyres for driving in Europe, but none of the brands I've looked at (with the tops being Michel CrossClimate2 and Conti AllSeason Contact 2s) make tyres in both sizes. So I'd have to have different brands/models on the front and rear axle. I am wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to adjust these fitments so that I can fit a different 'size' tyre (and therefore have the same on all four corners)? Or is this even a problem and would I be fine having contis on the back and crossclimates on the front or vice versa etc.? |

I have Nankang Activa something or other (I'd have to check the exact model), which were on my xDrive F31 when I bought it.
I've never run winters on any car before and I've never owned a AWD car before, I'm a person who will generally handle one or two days of snow on standard tyres and adjust my driving appropriately, so don't take this as an endorsement or recommendation in any way. But they exist, and in the mildish weather of the East Midlands, they are "fine". We had some pretty bad snow in November, I didn't go out in the worst day of it, but I did go out the following day and they seemed to perform decently. |

When I jumped from staggered 19's last year to square 18's this was pretty much the driving force behind it. I need full blown winters and, to make it more difficult, RFT's. I was running Pirelli Sotto 3's but the back ones were done and new rears were £300 each, and only one place had them available. I saw this as being the writing on the wall for the long term availability. I picked up some 18" rims for £150, powdercoated them for another £150 and then spent £600 on a set of 245/45/18 RFT Conti TS860S's that also have the dubious tick of being star marked, not that it matters on a square setup. Given the cost difference of 18" to 19" in the rubber band F30 sidewall sizes I'd suggest looking at 18's as an option if you have the space to store them.
If you need tyres for ticking the winter tyre box on certain European roads but also spend most of your time in the south of England I'd suggest that danb1979's suggestion of all seasons would be preferable to full winters. I'm certainly aware on warmer days that the rubber is more squirmy, albeit most of my driving is early morning and late evening when it's colder so it's less of an issue, and it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make given the amount of snow and ice I encounter regularly. With the higher ambient temps of the south of England even I'd probably be swayed by something like the GY Vectors. |

I have ordered a set. Feels a shame to be punting off the summer tyres with so much tread left but needs must... |

I had that problem with Conti Winter Contact TS830P in 18s last year. 255/40 no problem. 225/45, bad luck pal. So have Sotto Zero 3s on the front instead, which are very good. Mixed brands doesn't bother me over winter as I don't drive fast anyway.
All Seasons might be better overall as full winters aren't great on slimey roads above 8 degrees. Far worse than good summers in fact. |
