Surely they are not going to drop the awesome 30d as a 6 cylinder engine. The 4-pot diesel is a loud rough tractor in comparison.
Furthermore, it's efficient, relatively non- polluting so what's not to like?

It wouldn't surprise me, cheaper just to have a 4 pot in 3 states of tune.

380bhp for the m340 is acceptable and they had better make a touring version!!

it looks like BMW are following the Mercedes and Audi line on model strategies in the current and future generations now

higher power smaller engine cars with AWD as they both do in the S1,3,4,5 etc and "by AMG" C43, E43 etc models different from the full fat RS and AMG models

M performance now looks to being steadily aligned as AWD models to fit in that "by AMG" and S division approach

[QUOTE=Brigand;22776828]Remember it's a US centric article and will likely be using US engine identification."

But in the US they call the 320D 328D and this article refers to the EU style 320D and 325D type names.

So more of the BMW 6cyl rear wheel drive heritage could be about to go.

Also based on an Autocar leak of two years ago the 325e and 330e could be petrol to front wheels and rear wheel wheels driven by electric motors, battery where prop shaft is on pure rear wheel drive versions.

With regards a 4 pot as a 330d, I can see this would be easily achievable. Currently the BMW X5 25d is a 4 pot engine that puts out 231hp. I’m sure they can do a few tweaks to get it to put out near current 330d bhp of around 250-260hp.

I personally will be gutted if the M440i is xDrive and there is no way I will buy it. I bought my 440i based on it being RWD versus the S5 and C43.

It's all going to get a bit depressing with the next 1 series being FWD too, so no M140i.

Will likely push me to go used next which probably isn't a bad thing!

Me too

Downsizing engine capacity/cylinder count and increasing turbocharging is an ongoing trend. Everyone's at it - JLR, Volvo, MB.. Cant imagine BMW dropping the 3L inline 6 in the short term, but anything's possible when manufacturing costs, fuel consumption and CO2/NOx emissions dominate engine design and ranges

Or those with current 440i's will just have to keep them in tip top condition until as last pure rwd 6 yl BMW's they become a classic. Like E46 330i's being last non turbo non run flat 6cl rwd should be looked after!!

Personally I think the G20 330d will have the same engine as the G30 530d in the UK

And as you say, the M340i is xdrive, that's also not been mentioned before. Last I read it will be sdrive.

I don't believe anything until the actual models are in production AND available in the U.K.!
Yes but look at dates on articles, yours is January. The newer one is February.
Motor manufacturers are learning more about the new EU and world emission regimes which require very variant and option combination to be emission tested and hence are dropping options and variants.

Even Porsche have done it with the Boxster & Cayman

The way I read it, the US will get both a 540d and 340d.
Except they discontinued the 335d in the USA at the end of the E Series (and certainly no F Series 340d).

And Diesel sales of all brands have never been strong in USA and have been gutted even lower over the past 5 years. I say the odds of this naming EU Engines and not USA engines are 100%.

No they're not, it's just the USA naming. Currently 328d in USA has the 320d engine, which is going to now be the 30d there.

I’d be flabbergasted if there’s no 330d!

320-330hp for M340d hardly seems worth it.

380hp for the M340i definitely worth it.

Putting some distance between the petrol and diesel? or maybe the diesel does not meet emissions targets at higher powers?

A 330D is shown with 265 bhp. The issue is the no of cylinders. The article with EU BMW labelling suggests 4 but so far is the only source predicting this.

M340d is all about the torque! New 30d has nearly same torque as 35d, so however much will the 40d have!

Still feels so sluggish compared to the 340i petrol though. Loads of torque is good but you need decent bhp to go with it.
