HDD failure, iDrive stuck on "starting navigation system"

Nothing works except radio. Out of warranty. New unit costs $2500 just for the part.

Is there a way to replace the hard drive itself without replacing the head unit? Please help! 2016 428i

Your best bet is to probably just find a used one from a vehicle of the same model year and replace it. We do offer factory head unit replacements at a fraction of what the dealer charges and we can ship you the replacement pre-programmed and re-activated to your vehicle spec and VIN.

It would be bench programmed just like our retrofit kits.

PM me if you need help with that.

I'm interested. Will PM.

Edit: is there a way to put a SSD in there? I dont want it to happen again. When it happened, I unplugged bimmertech amp and it started working until I plugged the amp back. Idrive restated immediately and issue came back. I'm afraid that the amp could be causing it. Had no issues for a little while

Was going to be my suggestion if Car was truly out of warranty.

If it's truly just over 50k miles, you might try and see if they will make exception as electronics really should not fail on a 2016 vehicle regardless of mileage. It's not like other mechanical parts for wear and tear.

I can try. I had a hard time getting stuff done under warranty. I'm 99% sure they will say no and I won't argue.

I will update with results.

I still dont understand why replacing a $50 hard drive costs over $3000. There must be a way to open the headunit and replace the harddrive itself only.

Responded to your PM.

The QNX system will not boot up if it detects that you swapped the HDD so the only way to fix this would be to replace the head unit.

Are you talking about Blackberry QNX Car Platform? Could that not be hacked, er, coded to match the new SSD? I'm interested in this also because my idrive startup time is starting to vary quite a bit - I think the hard drive is starting to show it's age.

My iDrive screen has randomly restarted while in use twice over the past month.

Im wondering if my head unit is dying as well?

Just to know, if you clone the disk (before it fail of course), does that works?
Or it's S/N related.

I would think the SN could be low-level modified as well. If it was SN related, you'd think it would have to be programmed at the factory and thus should be dealer programmable.
