340i Lease end recommendations
Hi All,
My '16 340i msport is at the end of its lease and i'm debating if I should buy it at the end of the lease or return and look into a new G20 330i. It has 50K miles on it and is a CPO and never had any problems so far. If I return it, I'll have to pay for the excess mileage, new tires and some curb rash which could cost between $3K-$4k and get a new lease and start all over again. The payoff is $30K which is higher compared to market value even though its a CPO but I like the car and its been reliable so far but wondering if it will be a loss in the future if I decide to trade later. Also, once the CPO warranty runs out next year, I am concerned how expensive it may get to maintain in the future. I don't want to keep paying for a new car every 3 years so confused on whats the best approach for a long term solution. Appreciate your thoughts and advice on my situation.

I dont know about the USA but in the UK if your going into a new lease with another bmw the sometimes waver the charges for mileage and damage ect, might be worth asking as you might not have that 3/4k bill that you think you would.

I did check with multiple dealers and apparently they can only take it back as a trade since i had an owners choice lease. BMW lets them buy it for $24k and they have offered around $21K for it which leaves me with $3K - $4K in negative equity.

If you do not want to get a new car every few years you should not get a new car to begin with, assuming you don't require some esoteric spec. Won't help with this car but you seem like an ideal candidate for a CPO exec demo with 3-4K on it before purchase. Something to look at for the next one at least.

This one was a CPO exec demo as well...no issues with the car...just wondering if it makes sense to buy a car with 50K miles for $30K or look at another demo '19. The cheapest demo G20 330i with M Sport is around $40K and M340i around $50K.

I have a 340i and i test drove my coworkers G20 330 loaner today. I did not like it. It definitely felt slower than my car but it also felt a lot more numb and isolated.
FWIW my car is on non run flat tires and has the MPPSK and F80 LCAs and TSs. |

I have driven both G20 330i and the M340i and feel that my current F30 340i is in the middle of the 330i and the M340i in terms of drive/performance. Budget wise, I dont want to spend more than $40k hence may have to stick with the 330i or just keep my car.

Ah the exec demo is the worst car to buy post lease. Either buy it or lease and give back. Since the residual is based on MSRP you're effectively unwinding the good deal you got up front to a certain extent.

My opinion is that given what you’ve laid out I tend to think you’re best option is to refinance and keep the car you have. The F30 340i is pretty well sorted and you’re relatively unlikely to encounter big maintenance expenses in the near future. Just fyi - you don’t have a lease. Owner’s Choice is a balloon loan with an option to return the car rather than refinance the balloon. It’s not much different than a lease, but technically it’s not a lease. At least if you keep the car and refinance you won’t owe sales tax again.
You got a smoking deal by buying an executive demo on a Owner’s Choice loan giving you a really low payment for the last three years. Now you’ll have to pay a more realistic monthly payment. Another fyi - you can refinance at 3.99% or 4.24% at Pentagon Federal Credit Union www.penfed.org. Anyone can join by paying a one time membership fee to a military support organization; the link is on their website.

The g20 is a lot more quieter in the cabin which I like a lot when I had it as a loaner. But my 340i is much quicker. At least you had the car for a few years so you know what the car been through. Which is a huge plus. If it were me I’d keep the 340i

3k-4k mileage cars are too expensive. We've been successful either finding a car coming off lease or traded-in with 10k-12k miles that stickered in the $60's but could be bought in the $30's. Both times we had to broaden our search geographically to find the right combination of features, mileage and price. But when we did, it was even worth buying remotely and paying to ship the car to us. Good luck! |

Check what comps are going for on the used market. My 2016 340i xDrive with 40k miles was around $27k before tax/title/fees and came with a good amount of options. I was happy with the price.
If someone handed you $30k cash today would you buy the car? |

I would buy some used tires for lease return and get the curb rash fixed by someone other than the BMW dealer. 2016 340i msports with 50k miles are going for about $20k at the auction.

Not sure about owner's circle but on a lease, BMWFS is giving $4500 off the RV on the 340 if you buy it out. This is what I was told today by a BMWFS phone rep as my 340 lease ends next month.

Yes, my payoff is $30,250 after the $4k discount from BMWFS. The fine for over mileage + tax alone would be $5k if i get a new car so now i'm considering if I should just finance it via BMWFS and move on. The new M340i lease deals are very tempting which add to the frustration!
