N47 fuel injector warranty extension

I just got a letter from BMWNA, saying they are extending the warranty on the fuel injectors to 10 years or 120K from original in-service date. Covers N47T engines installed in these cars:

2017 F30 328d Sedan produced September 2016 to June 2017
2017 F30 328d xDrive Sedan produced September 2016 to June 2017
2017 F31 328d xDrive Sports Wagon produced September 2016 to June 2017

Quote:
If the fuel injectors are not working properly, it may lead to decrease in fuel efficiency, rough start and idle, and/or fuel odor inside cabin. A fuel injector failure will activate the Malfunction Indicator Light

Looks like you got your notice a day before I did. I see I'm supposed to receive a letter from BMW warranty today in the mail.

I've had two injectors replaced under warranty thus far, but they were much earlier on.

Time to run some smooth idle tests and see if we might be close to needing more injectors changed via warranty? haha.

How did you get them to replace it? My factory warranty expires end of month and I want to abuse it as much as I can.

Wonder if the X3d will be included? And if not, why not?

Well, mine actually caused CELs. After that happened I ran ISTA, grabbed the codes from them, and then ran the smooth running test in ISTA to show that even if it was "within tolerances" now, that it was close to the limits and thus failing.

I had another one throw a CEL once last year when I was out of warranty, but it went away and I haven't seen it come close to exceeding limits again. That one was a bit strange.

Thanks for the tip! I ran the Smooth Running Test w/ and w/o the EGR valve closed.

EGR valve open (normal)
Injector 1:0.25mg/Hub
Injector 2:1.00mg/Hub
Injector 3:-1.75mg/Hub
Injector 4:0.4mg/Hub

EGR valve closed
Injector 1:0.30mg/Hub
Injector 2:1mg/Hub
Injector 3:-2.0mg/Hub
Injector 4:0.5mg/Hub

If I'm reading ISTA right, it says +/- 1.2 mg at idle is normal. So injector 2 is borderline while injector 3 is out of spec?

Also, any way to get ISTA to spit out a number vs. the chart?

I believe the cutoff values were +-4 or 5. You'd get a CEL if it was out of spec.

A good test to see if it's getting worse would be to put some load, such as A/C and put the car in drive while holding the brakes. So far your numbers are within spec.

This is what it said:

For a system that is OK, values of up to +/- 1.2 mg idle position are expected. The fault memory entries are set in case of values starting from about 5mg.
I read that as anything outside 1.2 was abnormal and anything outside 5 would trigger a CEL. Maybe I interpreted ISTA wrong?

The fault threshold varies based upon fuel injection rate, but is within +/-3 to 6mg/stroke (per ISTA).

In my case where it threw CELs, the smooth operating test showed everything within spec, but since I had the CEL, I used the corrections in the smooth operating test to show how it was failing.

One other "gotcha" about reading ISTA is the way the plots are listed and then later where the injectors are listed aren't necessarily in the same order. On the results page it lists in firing order (1, 3, 4, 2) so you need to make sure you're not reading it as 1, 2, 3, 4.

Is there a different way to run the test? I'm on ISTA 4.23.14 and I can only find the test in DDE Expert Mode. That gives me a live print out and no way to get specific values

EDIT: Nevermind. I found it. Ran the test with the engine revving up to 3000rpm, min/max for each cylinder:
Cylinder 1: -0.4/0.5
Cylinder 2: -1.0/0.1
Cylinder 3: -0.2/0.7
Cylinder 2: 0.0/0.5
