Exercise & charity
Evening all,
Hope everybody is doing okay considering the uncertain times we live in! I made myself a New Years resolution to do more for charities close to my heart due to personal connection, as a result doing a 100 miles run during January and fundraising for Alzheimer's Society. My nan has been suffering with dementia for the past 4 years and day by day getting worse it is heartbreaking to see her like that, her personality and character disappear in front of our eyes! I started running last January just to keep fit as I was not doing any activities or exercises! I thought as I am doing the running, why not try and raise some money for a good cause at the same time! Set a realistic £100 target and thankfully managed to raise £120 so far with kind donations from family, friends and even neighbours Anybody else doing anything similar? And advise on how to raise more funds from your past experiences? As all these charitable organisations must be feeling the pinch in the current climate!

Bunch of my colleagues are doing the three peaks challenge in June I think for our nominated work charity.... Given some of them are marathon runners and triathletes I decided I wouldnt slow them down so I am doing the ground support (well they get a minibus and guides but any excuse for a drive out!)
Other than that seem to be sponsoring a lot of dry january attempts.... |

Support in any shape or form helps, so don't underestimate your involvement 👍🏻

I'm doing Rat Race 'Man Vs Coast' with a mate for Young Epilepsy. His daughter suffers quite a bit.
In the past a few of my Tough Mudders for Help for Heroes. Last year did a 30 mile walk >70,000 steps in day to help a work colleague who lost his daughter to child cancer and Ward 18 at Manchester Hospital. One year I donated my Qtr bonus to the charity anonymously, was a fair whack and to this day I've not told the guy. He does something pretty big every year. The walk this year was on Granda news, a few of you might have seen it. Not a lot but something every few years. People get a bit fed up being asked.

Good for you OP and sorry to hear about your nan. My dad died of/with advanced dementia and the last few years were quite sad at times. Thankfully though, even though it took his mind and affected him physically, it never changed his personality as it does with many people.
I've been a bit cautious with my donations lately as our circumstances could turn for the worse quite easily, but I try to do my bit. One of mates on the other hand went round Sainsbury's just before Christmas, filled a trolley to the brim with tins (we're talking a few hundred quid), paid for it and then handed it over to the food bank guy. He's a very modest bloke and he was actually a bit annoyed when his wife told me. |

I have already started my next fundraiser supporting Pancreatic Cancer UK (meant to jog 28 miles in February, but I am challenging myself to do another 100 miles) as I lost a very dear friend in 2020 to it! As I said before, as I am running anyway, maybe my efforts helps an organisation in need 🤞🏻

I'm still determined to do something for a child loss charity after our experience in late 2019. 275 is a relevant number as that was the days of gestation for our lost little girl. Therefore thinking "cycle 275 miles".
Back in the late autumn of 2019 i had picked up my training, then had to have a minor op which knocked exercise out for about 6-8 weeks, just got back in a rhythm and then Covid struck. Then after I picked up my outdoor cycling in early summer, my wife was pregnant again and spending time away from home on the bike became a no-no. Long story short, I hope to rebuild my fitness in the summer of this year (I used to cycle 60-70 miles with ease) and then look to see how I can do the 275 miles in either this year or next. Both fitness and family availability will determine it. Longest I've done in a day is 115ish, so 2-3 days might be possible.

By the way, to answer the last para of the OP, the 115 mile ride I mentioned above was for charity. Bristol to London back in 2015.
Raised £500 for Action children's charity, which was prompted by a team member having a 24 week miscarriage. Facebook and office were the main fundraisers, I think people in the office were pretty generous (at least the ones that checked what the charity was about) due to the lady's experience. Being August bank holiday it was about ten degrees and pouring with rain at the 6am start, I punctured on muddy/gravel debris washed out by the rain on a backroad climb at about 9am and the sun didn't show its face until I was deep into Berkshire. Guinness and BBQ at a west London rugby club (Staines or Ealing iirc) that served as the finish point, then a coach back. Brilliant day out.

@MashinBenzin
So sorry to read about your loss, heartbreaking 😢 amazing that you have and are doing what you can to raise funds for very worthy cause 👍🏻 I don't cycle so running is all I have been doing, if we were closer I would have happily joined you to raise funds for your charity

Thank you philiper1 all of that is really appreciated. Not sure if i made it clear in the original post that our loss was in Oct 19 and the subsequent comment was about a new pregnancy (few weeks to go), so edited that date in now. I promised my lost little girl that I would do something in her name, she will be my motivation when the time comes that proper training time is available.
