Unless your state has some insane tax rebate on trading cars in, sell it privately.

I sold my last car within a week on Cargurus, beating dealer offers by thousands of dollars.

This.

The average BMW buyer, especially 3 series these days has zero interest in a car with a manual transmission. It's why you can't buy a G20 with one.

We're in the same situation with selling a car re COVID concerns. We're going with either Carvana or Vroom. Something to consider

Friends with Audi's and Mercs, have experienced the same.
It is similar in my area. The dealership my car was purchased at has contacted me twice, personally, not one of those typical mass junk mail letters like you get all the time.

Last October my neighbor bought a used Cayenne and the Porsche dealer told him they were only operating off vehicles which were traded in. Transportation issues were keeping them away from auctions, so all they had to sell were good trade-ins and the few new vehicles Porsche set their way.
Yes, forgot to mention as well these dealers that were reaching out were making personal phone calls, and NOT through mass emailing campagne. They must really be desperate.

It almost tempting, seeing that higher mileage less equipped examples of my car current for sale are listed close to the price I payed 3 years ago!

I would have probably already caved if I could guarantee that my replacement car would also be readily available with manual stick shift.

I've been told repeatedly by multiple dealerships they won't even consider manual transmission cars, unless the car only comes that way, because they can't do anything with them.

These are both significant reasons for a low offer. There are three years worth of 340i’s out there now and that’s what most dealership buyers will want. And for a dealership a manual transmission is a detriment, not an asset. The car could literally sit for months before the right manual transmission buyer came along.

Did this happen to be Peter Pan BMW? I ask because I noticed recently they’re selling their used BMWs for quite a bit less than most Cali BMW dealers. That could be another reason for their low trade offer.

Peter Pan is really perplexing to me. I got my car from them at a 7,000 USD discount over the initial price that they had listed it at, and checking their inventory right now they are basically just liquidating their whole CPO inventory of F30 3 series sedans. I don't know what is going on. Are people not buying CPO 3ers due to COVID? Is Peter Pan just cutting their losses left and right to open space for high margin luxury SUVs? When I was down there in November the dealership was practically empty and the salespeople were sitting around waiting for customers, but the lot was packed with a LOT of new and used BMWs

I think you answered your question right here...

I've noticed their prices often seem lower than other places. I live over 1K miles away, but when searching nation-wide for my car two years ago I noticed they always seemed to pop up as having some of the lowest prices in my searches.

I never found what I wanted from them, but they caught my attention plenty of times.

Wow, I got 18k for a 2016 Mustang GT with 90k miles. I'd shop around for a better offer.

Some of these appraisers don't always know what they're looking at. I picked up an 06 GTO 6MT a few years ago that was listed some 4k under blue book. I also nearly caught a Cadillac CTSV wagon last year for nearly 10k under what their worth but the dealer caught it before I could move on it and pulled it.

I have been to Peter Pan BMW before, but no this was a Southern California dealer.

Maybe being in California inflates it by around $2K? Thus ending up with $20-24K range.

Having thought about this overnight I've decided to pass on the M2 and keep the 335i. I drive round-trip between the Bay Area and SoCal around 6-8 times a year and I think the extremely loud and drone-y MPE exhaust will wear down on me. Don't get me wrong, I still love the driving experience of this car and it's a very clean low mileage example, but for my specific circumstances I don't think this will be a good fit. Perhaps I will keep the 335i for commuting and buy a purer sports car for the weekends like a S2000 or a 981 Boxster. Might also consider a Supra as it combines BMW refinement with sportier Japanese tuning.

The link to the M2 in question is below. The dealership is BMW Buena Park in Orange County. Maybe someone else here may be interested?

You are smart to move on after thinking about it. Trade-ins are always in the dealerships favor. Plus he made it clear that he wasn't negotiating so while I understand your frustration, at least they were straight with you.

There is a Carmax about a mile down the road from the Buena Park BMW dealer.

Dealers make more money on used cars than on new ones.
Therefore they will lowball any trade in they can get.
I sold my car via Autotrader and got $6700 on my nice 2009 328i, instead of $3000 dealer offered me.

You would all laugh at what my local dealership offered for mine. I just nodded and walked out. It was an offer 4k below NADA fair tradein value (not retail.... TRADEIN\wholesale).... 4K!! let that sink in.

They had a similar used car on the lot with less options for sale than mine, 8k above the tradein offer lol.

COVID aside, sell it yourself. Manuals are in big demand among private buyers, especially well-maintained and well-sorted cars. Several dealers offered me $3000 for my '07 335 MT and I sold in private party for $9000. Several years earlier, a dealer offered me $1500 for my 540 and I sold it pp for $7000.

Have them wear a mask, let the car sit for 24 hours after they drive it, and reap the extra $ when you sell.

I once traded in a Lexus at a Ford dealer. They wrote it up as a 94. It was a 93. Got more money for it. Needless to say I never went back for the “we owe”. I’m sure it’s harder to make that mistake now.

Totally agree...the manual is the problem.....don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of manuals, but from a dealer perspective, a car with a manual is a rock that takes forever to sell.....most buyers going to a dealer looking for preowned cars not interested in manual......you will do much better selling in your own once you find the right buyer

Agreed, these days a manual is kind of like a pool. It’s not a selling amenity as much as a filtering criteria for motivated buyers.
