Evolution Racewerks high flow catted downpipe and state inspections
I've been considering the Evolution Racewerks high flow catted downpipe so that I can safely upgrade to BM3 stage 2 N55 93 octane tune: http://www.evolutionracewerks.com/node/269
My thoughts are that it's a good shot at passing state inspections. In my state, they do an OBD2 inspection and one non-continuous monitor can be 'not ready' and the rest can be 'ready' and still pass inspection. Curious if anyone has purchased this (catted) downpipe for an F30 N55 or similar and been able to pass state inspection. There are other options available such as the 'guaranteed no CEL' downpipe from Active Autowerke, and also Fabspeed (too expensive), but ER is a brand I know and trust from my stage 1 tune (upgraded charge pipe). Plus, a 'no CEL guarantee' is not a guarantee I'll pass inspections. Can anyone here vouch for the Evolution Racewerks high flow catted downpipe passing state inspections? If you are allowed one monitor in the "not ready" but not failed state then you can pass with even a catless. That is assuming no one looks under the hood or attaches a sniffer.
With bm3/mhd you can suppress the CEL and keep the monitor from showing failed. It doesn't change it to passed as that would be illegal. With that the brand of non-guaranteed catted is irrelevant. Just sure everything else has been set and cycled correctly.

I wanted to do this but my local indy shop said they had installed a few of these allegedly emissions-safe high flow DPs and it was always a crap shoot whether or not they'd pass, he told me he figured only about 40% of them or so actually were able to pass emissions.

Bottom line is that ER catted DP is going to throw a CEL unless you have it suppressed and it is NOT going to get the catalyst monitor ready. Where or not you pass inspection with that happening depends on your state. As mentioned above, the brand of DP you go with in this regard is irrelevant and ER is no different than any other. AA is the only one 49-state legal and guaranteed.
You can also technically fail the visual for any non-EPA approved DP, or CARB approved in California. This means every DP except AA can fail visual in all states other than CA, and even the AA fails in CA. |
