Whine

Hi...I have a Sept 2012 F30 M Sport 8AT 27k miles. Recently, when cold it whines in gears 1,2 and 3, up to 2000rpm. The whine is low level, but is louder than the actual noise of the engine and can be heard in the cabin. Once the engine has warmed up the sound disappears. There is no lack of performance.

Reading horror stories off the internet, it could be anything from a new turbo, new gear box or a new engine.

Any similar experiences, from F30 drivers would be much appreciated. Dealership want an extortionate amount of money just to look at it.

Your description sounds like what I heard in my car, same gears, same RPM, only when cold. Does it sound like the whine is coming from the rear of the engine compartment right behind the dash? If so, it could be the common AC hose rattle that many F3'x have dealt with. Easy fix if that is what it is.

Good luck... hope you get it figured out.

Hi 83883

Thanks for your post. It's hard to say where it's coming from, suffice to say it does sound like its nearby and its in tune with the engine rpm.

Will post the result....JE

I usually don't drive the car until it's properly warmed up, have never switched gears when the car is cold.. since I'm assuming you're out of warranty I would try an INDY shop. Google some around your area, I'm sure you will find a BMW mechanic somewhere who will take a look at it. Good luck!

Isn't your car still under 4 yr/50K warranty, or is it different in the UK? You can always find a good Independent shop nearby and get them to check it - they will charge you, but likely not as much as the dealership if your warranty has expired. Sounds like transmission - not enough miles to need a fluid change, though.

I'd at least start by getting the transmission fluid level checked...if it's low it might be causing increased noises...good luck

Dealership had the car for two weeks and replaced the camshaft sprocket, suspecting the noise was being caused by the oil pump drive. Thanks for your suggestions guys.

Did that sort it? I have the same issue but car is less than a year old and only done 13k. May be worth taking it to dealer.

21k km. Took it there and went out with a technician to get the sound to show, only then did it now show. It comes and it goes and drives me crazy.

Have you tried switching off the aircon - i.e no fan or AC.

Had a whine from mine. A/C pump replaced under warranty. Gone for 4 months but its back.

No need, every car gets it in reverse. Forgot what the reason was but it's due to something in the gearbox design.
