After 4 hours, I'm calling the doctor....

My 3GT is now in its 7th month and had been pretty close to perfect. Today, the rear wing raised on the highway....and got stuck in that position. It's sitting "erect" in the garage now. First service appointment is a week away....anyone familiar with this issue or, even better, a way to manually get the wing to store itself? Yes, I know it does no harm and is completely driveable, but it looks quite ridiculous off the highway.

There's a button to deploy and retract it on the window switch panel. You have to hold it down for a few seconds for it to work.

And FWIW, RTFM, it's in there.

Thank you...two Service Advisors, BMW Genius hotline, and I should all sit down and read together!

Seemed more like a failure than a feature...appreciate the tip!

I have inadvertently hit the switch, to find the spoiler extended after parking. If you do manually deploy it the switch lights up, and it will stay deployed until you manually retract it.

Apparently, for the first time since taking delivery, I also must have hit it inadvertantly, and without even realizing it existed! It didn't occur to me that this feature might exist, so that is my weak excuse for not researching the manual before scheduling a repair appointment, which I will now cancel of course It's fine again now, but I'm still not sure why one would want to have this switch, rather than letting the wing be speed-sensitive automated.

I guess its main reason is to allow you to extend it for cleaning it and the trough under it.

No, he was serious and correct and it solved the problem!

Sadly, there are many in this world who manually raise their spoilers cause they think it looks cool. My Cayman daily has an automatic spoiler too, and it is sadly not uncommon to see people with it raised all the time. My hot take: it never looks cool.

Probably the kind of guy with a combover who brags about the size of his "hands"!

Model X is the worst offender... at least in Toronto

You can't do a thorough washing, let alone wipe off residue from polishing, without raising the spoiler.

Does your experience suggest it can withstand most drive-through commercial car washes in the up position?

OK, thanks anyway. I understand as I don't either for my 2, which I own, but for the 3, which is leased, there are only so many hours in a day!

spoiler switch

If you put a bike rack on the hatch it could be important not to have the spoiler raise. Good to have the switch.

The switch cannot be used to prevent the spoiler from deploying. It won't retract it above 68 MPH either. You should use a hitch mounted bike rack.
