well, i'm in tears.
HOurs and hours of research, setup, buying the parts, 2 weeks of prep.
I wait for the rain to stop. And this has happened.

As it looks like many have reported, the filter shears away from its base as i pulled it out, even though i could not have been any more careful and slow as i was doing it.

Its now stuck in the housing. Reports have said dealers have ended up either replacing the housing itself, and 6-8 hours labour to boot.

Or some other dealers and DIY'ers have fabricated a tool to somehow get the bottom of the filter out the housing.

I'm really surprised because when i bought the car with 19k miles, BMW gave it an oil service, where they supposedly had replaced the filter.

9k miles later, and mine has broke.
Are these filters that crap that they disintegrate after 9k miles?

I'm in a heap of trouble now.
If I cannot get the bottom of the filter out the housing, i'll have to tow it to an independent garage.

Why didnt i just pay BMW the £250 and let them at it.......if it had broken it would have been their issue to deal with under warranty.

i'm so screwed. What a disaster.

Serves me right for trying to look after my own car and do an interim oil service.

Maybe some long needle nose pliers you could grab onto it and pull. That sucks .. but you'll get it out

I dont exactly know the complexities involved - just relax, take your time and figure out how to take it out. If you can see it stuck & feel it surely there has to be a way to take it out? Take a hard wire, make a hook or something, and just take your time to figure out how to take it out. Worst case an independent mechanic would be lot cheaper. Good luck.

Worrying but I have heard of them doing this before but only if left for 2 years. How much time had passed over those 9k miles?

As others have said an indy will sort it out for you at a fraction of the cost.

Only been 1 year since the last filter change.
I had read reports all over of the same issue but did not think I would be affected as I had not left it two years

I’ve changed a lot of oil and filters over the years, and looking at the colour of that oil/filter, I’m not convinced they changed it at 19K miles.

That looks like it’s been in a Diesel engine

Use a long pick tool to get behind the seal and pull out.

A couple of pieces of small diameter round bar with self tappers welded onto the end , screw them into the rubber flange that is still in the housing and that should get the bugger out.

If you are really stuck , and can leave the car for a few days, then i may be able to make you a set over the weekend and get them in the post on Monday.

Agree. On a low mileage petrol engine there is no way a fully synthetic oil would look like that after 12 months and only 9k. Of course this wouldn't be an issue if they had bloody dipsticks and I can't help but think some dealerships are taking liberties at times. The colour plus the failure of the housing might suggest its its first oil change.

As for the OP, rather than tow it somewhere if you can't sort it yourself ask a mobile mechanic to pop out and just stump up his labour charge and let him do the oil change as well.

well, i've bought 2 lots of this below and planning to use the 90 degree one to get it out.
i called a local independent and he seemed confident that i could do it and gave some advise about tackling it both sides at same time (which is why i bought 2 sets).

i'll see how that goes.

on another note it doesn't look like all the oil drained fully either - i left it over 1 hour yesterday, there must have been 1 drop of oil flowing every, i dont know, 15-20 seconds? so i thought 'that should be enough' and screwed the nut back in.

I suspect that will drain when the rest of the filter comes out.

This isn't a disaster, dropping a tappet down an inlet port, now that's a PITA.

This will come out with a bit of a sensible approach and time.

Don't give up, I have set out on 10 minute jobs and been at then 5 hours later, it happens to everyone.

You won't drain all the oil, that's normal.

i tried, i really did.
I think the tool i've got is just too flimsy, what i need is a long screwdriver with a flat edge that's bent 90 degrees.

theres no clearance between housing and filter base, but one side has a drain hole, and i can get a tool in that, twist, and then pull.

pulled as hard as i could, wouldn't budge. This pick tool iv'e bought just isn't cutting the mustard.

the only other idea is to tap two screws in and use pliers and pull them, but i don't have a T bar type tool which i could hold a screw and tap into the plastic.

good thing i cycle to work.........

Cant you just get a cheapo long screwdriver with a flat edge and bend the tip at 90 degrees ?

And this is why I just follow the CBS and let the dealer do it, hope you get it sorted.

If you could photo the base of your new one it may give us who haven't come across this crazy filter some other ideas - how big is the hole in the base and with the tool you had could you at least get behind it to pull? i.e. right idea just not strong enough? You may struggle to create a tool from a screwdriver as it will likely snap as they tend to be hardened or just plain brittle - but whatever you come up with along those lines (e.g. the picks you have) you may be better to use two and slide something between them so you can squeeze and pull and that will lever the bent ends out behind the hole and give you far more grip... But if the hole is to one side you may still struggle as it won't come out straight and so will bind - so Kendo67's manufacture may be the only way so you can pull evenly on 2 sides. Have you tried rotating it using a large screwdriver/bar in the hole to at least break the seal/loosen before trying to pull it out?

Was the engine hot when you did your first attempt?

Don't give up - take a breather - you'll find a way... Good luck, many of us have been there on other projects...

If not then theres no need to tow it, just put the rest of the filter back in and fill up with new oil, the car will run fine, new oil doesn’t need the filtration anyway!
